Hi everyone, and welcome to the new Quaker Parrot forum! I hope you like the new setup as much as I do, and if you have any questions, comments or concerns please don't hesitate to send me a PM (private message). Using the "Messages" tab: In the top menu, click on "Messages". Click "Create Message" located on the right side of the screen. Type your subject, then in the "Recipients" box type "msdani1981". Type the body of your message. Click "Send". For those who need help, here is a tutorial on How to Start a Thread. You can find other tutorials in the "Forum Guidelines~Contact Info~How To" section. Now, a little about myself... My name is Dani and I'm from northwest Washington state. I joined the Quaker forum in 2008 because my husband, Zach, and I wanted to add another bird to our flock. At the time we had Arnold Schwarzebirdy aka "Arnie" (a budgie) and the Tazmanian Devil aka "Taz" (a cockatiel). Soon after, our baby Quaker Chewy joined the flock. About two years ago I noticed that our mods had "disappeared" (as in, they had jobs, families, and...well, lives...LOL) and weren't as active on the forum. So I approached Shelly and offered to join the moderating team which was welcomed. So, here I am. And I have to say, you all are AMAZING people. Managing this forum has been a true joy. My current flock includes Taz and Chewy, my Keeshond dog Bilbo Doggins aka "Bilbo", my siamese mix cat "Diablo", my Appaloosa mare "Cami", a Fire-Bellied Newt, a saltwater aquarium which is home to a Mantis Shrimp, a saltwater reef aquarium, two freshwater community tanks, a freshwater tank which is home to a female Red-Eyed Puffer fish, a freshwater tank which is home to a Betta, and a freshwater tank that is in the process of getting set up to breed Crystal Red shrimp (now it is completely cycled and the pH and kH levels are correct, so it is home to a school of ten Exclamation Point Rasboras and six Blue Diamond Shrimp (instead of the Crystal Reds). Outside of this forum I'm also a volunteer staff member of Auction Horses, a group of concerned horse lovers dedicated to saving horses from slaughter. I don't go into much detail about this here (other than posting about my own horse) because of the graphic nature of the subject, but if anyone has questions please feel free to send me a PM. I also like to read, make beaded jewelry, sew, and spend time with friends and family. Welcome to the new forum!

Thanks, it's great to be here with other Quaker lovers. I finally got my first baby Friday. I let him/her chose me by putting my hand in the box. He was the first to come say hello. I've named his Cabu. He's 8 weeks old and I'm still doing some hand feeding. We started pellets and mash today which both were a hit. I'm looking forward to him learning step up this week.

Hi, Thanks to the welcome wagon I'm here because I kind of inherited my daughter's Quaker. He's about 2, maybe a little older. He was purchased from a breeder and properly raised, hand fed, has a great vocabulary, eats well, not clipped, etc. All was well in birdy land until my daughter "left" my household and I don't anticipate her coming back anytime soon. So for now, he's my little birdy. I have a lot of parrot experience, but it's been a while. Little Vinny is depressed and stressed and in only two weeks since his mommy left, I've already had to take him to the vet. Poor baby plucked his throat bloody. He's on antibiotics, pain meds and aloe spray and seems to be leaving the area alone for the most part. But, we are in for a long difficult road because he really wants NOTHING to do with me. So that's why I'm here…..I need a support group for this little depressed bird. Thanks for letting me share Vinny's Grandma

Oh, goodness, I'm sorry. I'm happy you found us, though, and really hope you can get the support you're looking for! We're all friends here, so feel free to ask any questions and feel safe doing so. The only dumb question is the one not asked. Welcome!

Hi I am Nery. I lost Peppy, my quaker more than a week ago (he flew away on 09/28/2014). It has been 11 days. He was in the care of a friend while I went to visit my mother out of Houston, TX. I am devastated, and I miss him very much. This afternoon, I got a call from a nice lady-Lindsey who found a quaker. I ran to her house, but the parrot she has did not recognize me. She stated he acted different with me than he did with her. She let me take him with me. I brought him home because I think he may be Peppy, and he may be traumatized. Is it possible Peppy is traumatized enough to not recognize me? He is not acting like Peppy. He is not flying, he walks on the floor. I am thinking maybe he is hurt from flying more than what he was accustomed to. He was found miles away from my house. At least 40 miles. Is it possible he is tired? Is it possible he flew that far? I put some treats to see if he takes the sunflower seeds (but he did not). Sunflower seeds are his favorite. Also, Peppy is very talkative and hyper. He would get very excited when I walk in the door, and he sees me. He laughs like me. If I put Peppy in a cage he holds high, this parrot stays on the floor of the cage. He is not excited. He looks sad and he is not talking at all. Well, it was 8:00pm when I got him. Peppy goes to bed at 7:30pm, and if he is not, he gets frustrated. I just checked on this parrot, and he is sleeping in the floor. Maybe I am so desperate to believe this is Peppy. Should I wait and see what happens. Could this be Peppy or definitely not? Can someone help me?

Hi Nery. My Quaker is Peppy, too. What a horrible experience for you. It isn't typical that an escaped bird is found so far from home, but in that length of time many things could have happened to explain it. It is possible that that is your Peppy, and if not, it is almost certain he was someone's pet. It sounds like he is ill. That could explain all the "off" behavior you describe. Do you have an avian vet? I would get him in as soon as possible.

Hi Nery, your Quaker Peppy came up on my feeds yesterday and caught my eye on Parrot alert, I am glad you found this forum, how is Peppy the second or first doing this morning? Is he acting more like himself? Are there wild quakers around there? Could he be a baby? I hope you get some answers. Good luck!

Oh goodness, I'm so sorry I didn't see these more recent posts until now! Hmm...40 miles is a really long way from home! I would say that it "could" happen... A couple years ago a friend of ours called and said that while he and his girlfriend were having a picnic at a lake a "parakeet" landed on their towel and "Can you take it?" They brought it over and its head was sticking out of a towel. Zach and I looked at each other and said "That's not a parakeet! That's a Senegal Parrot! Hmm....we don't really have a cage big enough for it, but it should be okay while we try to find the owners and if we can't find the owners we'll get a bigger cage." A couple days later our friend was at a place that seems a long way away (I just looked on Google, and it's only about 4 miles as the crow flies...about 15 miles to drive) and saw a "missing bird" flyer, and called us. We called the number and the guy identified the bird so we reunited them after two months of seperation. It was really great.

Welcome, Violet. You can have a DNA test done to determine the gender of your QP. It can be done by your avian vet when your parrot goes in for a well-bird checkup. The only other reliable way to tell if a Quaker parrot is male or female is to wait and see if the bird lays an egg. If it does, then your parrot is certainly a female.

My name is paul. I have a male quaker named barney. He was given to me at the age of 13 on my birthday (1988). I am so blessed to still have my little "floppy", as I call him, with me today, and we have shared each others life together. he is 26 years old and still playful and happy. he only had to go to the vet once when he was around 3 years old when his claw got stuck in between the old cage I had and he pulled it clean off. he has a little stub that has grown back since then. I am happy to be here in the forum and look forward to meeting others with these amazing creatures.

Glad to meet you, Paul and Barney! Did you have any idea when you got him that you'd still be together decades later? I have an older Quaker, too. Peppy's supposed to be 22, but I only got him a year ago, and his past is rather cloudy. Maybe you can help some of us learn how best to help our birds as they get older.

Welcome Paul & Barney! It's nice to have some more mature Quakers join us on the Forum. It sounds like you and Barney enjoy a good life together.

I have gave my bird alot of love and fed him alot of things I enjoy, but only things that are safe for him. I am amazed that he has been with me for this long.I have always been very careful in avoiding things that could put him in jeopardy over the years. He's such a part of me that it hurts to think that he will not be with me one day. He was part of the family when me and my father and mother and brother were in the same house growing up. my brother had a cockatiel named fred and many love birds and finches at one time. barney outlived them all and is still kickin. hes the joy of my life.

Welcome, Paul and Barney. I love your 'pet' name for him. How did you start calling him 'floppy'? It's kind of cute!
