would you use the zupreem cockatiel pellets? I was going to get kaytee exact but i dunno. Would the zupreem cockatiel be ok to use?

He might prefer one over the other, but you won't know until you try one. I've used Kaytee's hand feeding formula, but never tried their pellets. I've tried Zupreem's fruit pellet, but it was not anyone's favorite here. Many birds really like it, though. I would buy the smallest bags available until you know, and don't give up on one too soon.

The pellets sold for Cockatiels and Conures are appropriate for Quakers too, though the larger ones can work too. Ralph normally gets the small ZuPreem pellets, but now expects to share some of the medium-sized ones that Scooter the CAG gets-- and she likes to have a few of Ralph's small ones. Ralph didn't care for the Kaytee pellets-- the ZuPreem and Higgins are his current favorites-- but other parrots do like them and maybe your QP would too.

Hi lilywhite and Kiwi, welcome to both of you (even though I am somewhat late). The others have given you great advice regarding pellets. Hope it goes well!

They have, they have been great and very welcoming. I have a better idea of what to do next. Kiwi will soon be starting a new diet. Wish me luck

Hi there, I'm recently new to the parrot world and decided to join you all in learning about QP's as well as gathering advice and tips on everything about our feathered friends. Round about 3 weeks ago, I adopted my 5 yr old, male quaker from my aunt a few towns away. They thought when they purchased him that he was a she and had named her Hannah. Since we've had him, we've renamed him Sammy and he's taken quite well to his new name. While he lived with my aunt (I'm not sure how long she had him) he had a room mate in another cage. It was another quaker parrot and my mother adopted him. Her parrot, kiwi, is very lovable, quiet and doesn't speak. Sammy, on the other hand, was a bit of a biter and loves to use his vocals & words. In our few short weeks of having Sammy, we have taught him positive reinforcement on his good behavior and attitude with us. At first, Sammy was iffy with me, he would talk and be nice while out and on top of his cage but putting him in or out of the cage I would have to use a glove because of him biting. When he would be on my shoulder he would out of no where bite my cheek, neck, ear, anything he could latch onto. So when he would behave like that I simply returned him to his cage and told him that wasn't nice, or being a good boy. Instead of reaching in after awhile, I just opened his cage door and let him come out when ready. When he did finally let me handle him without protection on my hand, he was rewarded and since then he's gotten the hang of it very quickly and the biting has subsided and I couldn't be more proud of him! I've always had a passion for birds and he has turned out to be everything I had imagined. I have a wonderful boyfriend, a 5 yr old little girl, and 2 small dogs (1 pekingese & a 5 month old Chihuahua). My chihuahua loves our bird and Sammy seems to like and enjoy her as well. Sammy is rarely ever left alone and roams our apartment at all times with us. He has grown to the family fast and love him to pieces. He picks up words fast, but what are some tricks I could work on him with? What toys do they particularly like? I haven't seen him play with the ones in his cage. And treats? Any advice & tips is greatly appreciated! I look forward to all the readings on the site. Thankyou! ♡Gabby

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you are doing great with Sammy.
As far as training goes, it can be anything. Of course every interaction with Sammy is a training session, but if you're looking for something specific, there are some useful things you can work on. Training him to accept being wrapped in a towel and to take liquid from a syringe may come in handy. Target training is good to start with, since you can use it as the foundation for other training. Some people train their birds to wave with one wing or do a 360 on a perch, and on and on. Whatever you can think of.
Some parrots are very interested in toys while some are not at all. You can try to stimulate his interest by playing with them yourself. Its hard to predict exactly what an individual will prefer. My Quaker liked plastic chains. Some of them are happy as clams with cardboard tubes.

Welcome! My QP Ralph doesn't have much interest in parrot toys, and prefers things that aren't toys to play with. He likes to untie strings I attach to his cage, bird-safe cotton and vegetable-tanned rawhide laces. He also likes to build with thin wooden dowels (about 1/8" thick), cut to approximately 8" lengths. He enjoys chewing up popsicle sticks, which can be bought in craft stores or places that sell specialty cooking supplies. He sometimes will play with plastic keys, a toy meant for human babies but many parrots like them too. A favorite treat of both parrots here is plain air-popped popcorn (no butter, salt or oil). Lots of birds like pumpkin seeds for a treat.

Welcome, Gabby and Sammy! You might want to check the safe/unsafe foods list on this site, just to be sure you don't give Sammy something that will harm him (e.g., avocado=TOXIC). It sounds like you're doing very well with him! Be careful not to leave him unsupervised in the same room as the dogs or your daughter. Toys: Our quaker, Bonnie, is happy with empty cardboard toilet rolls and ignores all the toys in her cage. She would rather play with her humans.

Hello Gabby and Sammy. Sounds like you have yourself a new life long friend. Thumbs up to you for changing your approach to your Quaker and having success.
My Quaker Oscar... will not play with toys and I have a huge box full to choose from. He loves to attack empty cardboard toilet rolls... lol.. and basically spends most of his day either playing with me, chewing my clothes, preening my face, eating and of course... building houses.
If you have any specific questions on quakers please do not hesitate to ask. The folks on here have a lot of knowledge on Quakers and are always happy to help.

Always searching and glad I finaaly found this group. Only someone that has a quaker as "family" can share the joy and exprience of raising them. Thanks for the help and understanding. I' a huge animal lover but my birds are as I said family. There is Rocky who is currently watching from the tv to make sure he is the focus of my attention this morning. Hello nene and welcome to the forum. Always glad to have new members on board. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have as we are all here to help one another. My Quaker Oscar is licking the sweat off my face and begging me to take him to his condo house in the bathroom drawer... lol.
Hope to hear your stories soon.

Welcome, nene and flock. Happy to have you join us on the Forum. I've lived with parrots for 48 years, and still learn new things about them all the time. This is a perfect place to learn and talk about Quaker parrots-- and other kinds of birds too.

Hi everyone!
My name is Lyzz and I just collected my new feathered friend today named Cedric who is 8 weeks old.
New Quaker owner so I’m a rookie but he seems to like his cage and his new setup. How long does it take for them to get settled and how can I help him settle in?
So great to see a community like this, I hope to learn a lot from you all and get to know your feathered friends too!
Xx
