Well here in NSW, Australia, we seem to be travelling okay. We have had a few deaths but not as many as originally anticipated. Of course, everything is shut down so I only go out once a week to do supermarket shopping. It is hard not visiting with friends but they are enforcing the 2 person rule so it makes it tough. However, I deem myself very lucky. I get a government payment every 2 weeks, don't have a mortgage and have a roof over my head. I feel so awful for those people who have been put off work, have mortgages or rent to pay and families to feed. I also feel very sorry for the homeless. These are uncertain times but we will come out of it. I wish Australia would start its manufacturing industry again - I am happy to pay extra. We can be self sufficient but greed gets in the way. All birds and cats are doing well although I am getting the impression that Casper is getting fed up with having me around. I hope everyone else is practising the hygiene rules and that you all stay well and healthy.

Glad you are okay with Bonnie but the other 2 conditions are a bit of a worry. What's the latest news? You need to come back to cooler climates

Biteybird, it is totally unbelievable. I have masses of bees drinking at the bird bath every day - have never seen that before. I have been putting bird and lizard water stations around the place. There are birds coming in to drink at the bird bath that I cant even identify. Can you believe I even had a scorpion in the house a couple of days ago - didn't know there were any around here. Hoping that the worst is now over.

Hi everyone, what a horror the past few weeks have been. We still have a few fires burning which cannot be controlled but the one near me is being contained. I have driven along roads where the fires have been and it is like a bomb has gone off and devastated everything. I have seen burnt, dead wildlife on the side of the road. I spend a lot of time crying when I travel these roads as it is just so unbelievable. We have had rain and the grass is growing in some of the burnt out areas but really, it is very eerie with no sounds of birdlife. All our wildlife rescue groups are overwhelmed by the amount of animals that are still coming into care but we have groups supporting them with funds and food. We are doing food and water stations in some of the areas as the animals that escaped now face starvation as there is nothing for them to eat. The generosity of people is amazing but there are still some lowlifes who think looting and shooting animals is okay. It will be a long road to recovery for people and animals. The firefighters have been completely awesome. I sincerely hope that I never see anything like this again in my lifetime.

You have no idea of the magnitude of these fires. Lives have been lost. Homes are gone. Our wildlife is decimated. For weeks, we have been living with these monsters. The one near me sends live embers 30 kms in front of it and I have spent many days and nights watching out for these embers. It has a fire front of 1,500 kms - and this is only one of the major fires currently burning through my state. Other states are also experiencing major bushfires. Even if we get rain, it is thought that it wont help as the rain would need to be torrential and over many days. I cannot tell you how depressing and upsetting it is. Our firefighters are extraordinary. Most of them are volunteers and put their lives on the line every day so they can save us. The Aussie spirit of helping those in needs is magnificient. I don't know how we will ever recover from these fires as we have never experienced anything like it before.

It's great that she remembers you. Sometimes we just don't click with animals no matter how hard we try and it was very brave of you to hand her over to your friend. Jade is obviously enjoying her new environment and becoming even more spoilt.

That's really sad but you gave her a wonderful life. I think it is so important for us to be there at the end and mourn their passing. They live on forever in our hearts.

Hi guys, sorry I haven't been around much. Life sometimes gets in the way. I lost my little dog, Emma, about 6 weeks ago - she was diagnosed with a massive tumour on her heart and died 4 days later. I lost one of my best friends about 3 weeks ago - we spent nearly every day together. It was unexpected and she was in hospital in Venice for 5 weeks before she finally passed. It was terrible. My little cat, Rosie, also has a heart problem and is on lots of medication - the original vet she saw in May gave her weeks. But she is hanging in there. My vet says she will have a very short life so I am making sure she has the best time possible. Shah is doing fine. I will try and check in a bit more frequently.

Haven't been around for a while and am shocked that you have gone from 6 to 3 birds. I am sorry to hear about Ringo and Benjy. That little budgie lived longer than most of them so you have been a wonderful bird mum to give him such a long life.

Thankyou for taking him in. This will be a big challenge but you will be rewarded in the end. I wont add to what the others have written except to reinforce their statements to take your time and don't rush anything. As Siobhan says, when he makes the tiniest of overtures make a big fuss of him. If you have any questions or need information, please ask us. We are all here to help you and your new buddy.

Cats sleep a good part of the day. Fortunately, afternoon naps are in my bedroom so I quietly close the door and then get the birds out to play. My cats (they are only young) spend at least 3 hours in the afternoon sleeping. If I get the birds out at other times, I herd the cats into the bedroom and close the door. They have a cat stand in the bedroom and spend the time on neighbourhood watch or birdwatching the wild birds. The fact is that it only takes a split second for things to go wrong when you let cats and birds roam at the same time. No matter how well you think you know your animals, you really don't. But, ultimately, the decision is yours. We can only advise you on what we have heard or experienced.
