Thinking of you and Peppy. Good luck with the vet.

Our vet visit went very well yesterday. Peppy was feistier than ever before, which is good, under the circumstances. I think they did miss his cuddlier side, though. His mass has shrunk further, and we're not going back for a month. He'll get another ultrasound and a blood draw to see what is happening with his liver. I could keep him on Lupron indefinitely, though making the trip every two weeks is not appealing. I will ask if the more local vet stocks it, but it isn't likely. It is purchased in a human dose, at about $1000 a pop, and most can't afford to stock it. An implant of another hormone is a possibility. It goes in like a microchip, using a huge needle. If he's still doing great at the next visit, we'll probably do nothing but continue to monitor.

So glad to hear Peppy's visit went well! Sheesh, that Lupron is pretty expensive. How many bird doses does that $1000 human dose translate to? How long do those hormone implants last? Do they need to be refreshed?

Wow...that is a lot of bucks. Maybe the vet in town will get it for you since he is pretty much guaranteed the sale? Does not hurt to ask. I am glad peppy does not have to go back for month. You are one incredible woman easttex. My hat goes off to you.

Aaron, I'm not sure how many bird doses you get out of that, but it has to be an awful lot. I imagine it's based on weight. And I doubt if the local vet will stock it if she's not guaranteed a whole lot of business. Big question mark on the implant. It was actually created for ferrets. Most of the time when used in birds, it is to control the seasonal hormones and would be given once a year. Not sure how it might work with Peppy.

Hmmm.. Interesting. Ok. Well hopefully he continues to improve and such measures will not be necessary!
