Don't give up Easttex. Keep fighting. Shah was berko again last night so I started to tell him that Peppy wasn't doing so well and he immediately made eye contact with me, listened to what I was saying and then started muttering back to me. So we both said a prayer together for Peppy to get better (although I don't understand quaker mutterings). Sending big hugs your way.

Thanks, everyone. Peppy tried to sleep the whole way home, but did perk up a little before bedtime. He ate quite a bit of formula. Poor guy had a lot done to him this time. In addition to the barium X-ray, he had numerous injections, gavage feeding, oral meds, poking and prodding, etc. His liver values are way out of whack. His bile acids, which shouldn't exceed about 100, are at 235. And of course the mass. So instead of getting his daily meds reduced, he's had a couple added.
I sure like the hospital. It is expensive, but for the price you get all kinds of immediate consultations with experts in internal medicine, radiologists, and others. And they seem to care a lot about Peppy. He snuggled up to one of the techs yesterday, and it really touched her. Everyone there tells me he's a real favorite.
The next step is a second lupron injection in two weeks.

I bet he is pleased to be home. What a special guy he is - putting up with all that and still snuggling up to people. Get better soon Peppy.

Easttex... you don't have to answer this if you do not want to... but I am curious. What would be a ball park figure of what it has cost you so far? I have never had to deal with a vet yet... let a lone a hospital for pets.

Well I'm glad to hear he was hungry-- that's a good sign at least. Poor guy is going through so much (you too!) He's such a sweetie pie.
Yeah, I've been wondering how much this is costing you as well. It must be a fortune. The hospital really sounds amazing though.
Why are they waiting so long to do the lupron injection?

To give a very small idea, Pico's care cost us about $700. Peppy's care has to be in the $1,000s. I can't imagine.
You and Peppy are still getting TONS of prayers from my flock.

Easttex... you don't have to answer this if you do not want to... but I am curious. What would be a ball park figure of what it has cost you so far? I have never had to deal with a vet yet... let a lone a hospital for pets. Without sitting down and adding it all up, which I will have to do one of these days, I'd estimate it at close to $5000 so far. Don't let that scare you off of a vet, though. A vet visit with a basic physical exam is usually pretty reasonably priced. Blood panels can be a bit expensive - in the neighborhood of $175. X-rays at the hospital are usually about $250, as are the follow-up ultrasounds. Staying in the hospital was something like $135 per night, I think. But they get round-the-clock care, and not just boarding. I'm sure I'm paying for a lot of overhead at this place, but once you discover something like this, it's hard not to go back. I always want the best for my birds, so will manage somehow.

Why are they waiting so long to do the lupron injection? When they give them as a series like this, they do three, all two weeks apart. I think the first one might be helping. He was very noisy yesterday, mostly just wanting to get out to snuggle, which tells me he's feeling better but not great. He ate more formula. And he really fought me on the #4 medicine I had to give him last night. He was good for the first three, but than decided that was enough.

I was guessing it was at least $3k and wagered it was probably more. It's such an amazing thing to be willing to spend this much on your birds, Easttex. I'm sure I'd do it too-- but the whole thing is a bit scary.
I see, so he's already gotten the first Lupron shot of the series. I missed that detail somehow. I'm very hopeful that the first one is helping.

Each day he seems a little better. He took his first bath in a while yesterday. Last night I didn't even make the formula, he's been eating so little of it. He's back to liking some of the other stuff, like his cooked meal. I think the hormone injections are the key. We go for the second next week, and one more two weeks after that. At that point he'll have an ultrasound to see the size of the mass. If it's smaller, he'll probably get a hormone implant.
He is getting four meds in the morning and four in the evening, and while he is amazingly good about it, it does get to be too much for him sometimes. I've found that if first I spend several minutes scratching all around his face, he will be quite docile through the morning doses. Opens his beak for me and doesn't try to spit it out. That advance bribery doesn't work in the evening, though, and he occasionally struggles by the fourth. Poor guy.

I'm very happy to hear that the lupron seems to be working. That's very encouraging! Poor little guy... all those meds surely aren't very fun for him. What a good boy.

Brave little Peppy. If I could show my tears on here I would.
