It's a tough road Easttex. It's emotionally exhausting. My heart goes out to you.

Peppy had lupron injection #2 yesterday. They also did an ultrasound to get a better look at his liver, to figure out why the bile acids are high and going up. They haven't gotten a good look at it before because the mass distorted everything, but the mass is shrinking. The bad news is the vet thinks the liver is rounded, which suggests fibrosis. The only way to be sure is a biopsy, which has a fairly high risk for a bird. The alternative is to go ahead and treat it with meds as if we knew that's what it is. That's probably a decision to make sometime after lupron #3.

Gosh, that's unfortunate. I'm really glad to hear the mass is shrinking, however. I don't know enough about the meds used to treat fibrosis to know how much of a tradeoff it would be to simply treat him as if he has fibrosis. Seems like avoiding something so invasive as a liver biopsy would be wise, but I don't really know what I'm talking about. How is little peppy feeling?

The third injection is two weeks from today. I asked about the risks of the medication, and the vet said that with a cat or dog, they would never start it without doing a biopsy first, but then they have bigger livers and less risk. She hasn't had any problems when it has been used for birds, but she would have to research side effects experienced with others. She will do another ultrasound in two weeks, and maybe things will be clearer. She also said they will use a machine they keep in the exotic area that is not as good as the hospital's, but should be okay for tracking and will be cheaper.
He appears to be feeling pretty good. He was pretty subdued last night, but the injection seems to do that. He still needs to gain weight. He's at about 134g, and his keel is gaining a little muscle, but it's still too sharp. He doesn't want the formula now.

Hmmm, okay. Well, hopefully a biopsy isn't necessary and the treatment won't be too rough on him. I'm very happy to hear that he seems to be feeling pretty good. That's fantastic. We're rooting for both of you!!

Peppy and I will be off early tomorrow morning for Lupron injection #3. He's been doing very well, but yesterday there was a saliva puddle in his cage first thing in the morning. I don't know what it means at this point, but, as always, I hope to learn more from his vet.

We had to reschedule. The vet is out sick. We could have seen another, but I think we are going to have a "where do we go from here" conversation, and that needs to be with his regular doc. We go Monday now.
