Pico, our 10 month old male Pacific Parrotlet, is sick...or something.
About 2 1/2 weeks ago, I took him to the vet because we noticed that he was sneezing, sitting fluffed up on the bottom of his cage regularly, and sleeping a lot more than usual. She said that he seemed fine, his lungs sounded clear, but said that I may have caught it so early that it wasn't too bad yet. So I did a round of Baytril.
Nothing has changed.
While we were at the vet the first time, one of the vet techs noticed some tiny bugs on the towel in Pico's carrier. The vet came back in and using her microscope, identified them as avian mites. She's been calling around to various specialists in the state, to find out the best way to treat him. On Tuesday we're bringing in all of the birds for a dose of Ivermectin (yes, the horse de-wormer!).
A week after the first appointment I took Pico back in to have some blood work done, because nothing had changed. Everything came back normal. Phew.
Tonight Zach and I noticed that Pico sits and shakes. His whole body shakes. I picked him up from Zach's hand and I said out loud "Is my hand shaking, or is that YOU, Pico???" Zach said it's Pico.
I recently clipped Pico's wings, because he's not good at flying and it was dangerous for him. He kept flying into the walls, and the final straw was when he flew straight UP, hit the ceiling and crashed to the floor. He was fine afterward, but I'm wondering if he may have some brain damage? I'll talk to the vet about this possibility on Tuesday, but what do you all think??

My first "mentors", so to speak, were Buddy and Beverly Manley. Bev was a breeder (may be still), and had a Quaker that I can't remember his name...anyway, when I asked about Quakers she said they require a very dedicated owner, and are definitely not for everyone. I say that assessment is very true. That quaker LOVED Bev, and HATED her aviary helper to the point where he would get on the floor and chase Donna into the bathroom and Donna had to wait for Bev to come and rescue her. I can easily see how that could happen. Chewy will not let me touch him, and I don't try to touch him unless I'm wearing this one specific coat, because when he attacks me his beak doesn't get through the fabric. He can bite me all he wants and it doesn't hurt. LOL

Ummm....I've never experienced this! Naughty, clever Oscar!!! I think I would ignore it a few times. You don't want him to think he's abandoned when he calls, but.... Tough call.

LOL Chewy likes to chew on Zach's fingernails. I guess he thinks they're too long, or not supposed to be there!

Some small species you may want to look up: Neon tetra Cardinal tetra Sparkling gourami Five-banded barb Cherry barb Platy Molly Guppy Harlequin rasbora (also called Rasbora Hets) Panda Cory (there are other small cory cats, but I can't think of them) Betta (make sure none of your other fish are fin nippers) For a freshwater nano tank you could do: Betta Celestial Pearl Danio (aka Galaxy Rasbora) Dwarf Emerald Rasbora ...there are other tiny species, but I can't think of them Several months ago, Zach set up a tank for breeding tiny shrimp. We chose Blue Diamond shrimp, but here are some more species: Crystal Red (red and white) Carbon Rili (blue) Orange Rili (orange) Fire Red (red) Blue Dream (blue) Blue Diamond (blue and black) Yellow/Golden Rili (yellow) Crystal Black (black and white) Mystery snails are always good additions. I'll have Zach add more to this when he gets home. Or maybe Ricky can chime in here... Off the subject of fish species, this is a GREAT explanation of how to stock an aquarium. It will help you when you're looking at fish species and thinking of how big of an aquarium you want. From the forum at FishLore.com: The question was about adding some corydoras to an aquarium. From other posts, I gathered that this person has a 10 gallon tank. I hope this helps!

Do you have a local fish shop where you could donate some babies?

I asked Zach what the problem could be, and he asked if it's a brand new tank and if you cycled it (put some white cloud minnows or similar fish in, and let good bacteria build for about a week)). He suggested getting a water test done.
