Scooby has never been a very lively snail, even as snails go, and he didn't care for the move into the bigger tank I got for Freckles last weekend. He attached himself to the hood and I didn't realize it, and when I took it off to move the filter, he fell off and hasn't moved since. I thought he was dead, but he didn't smell bad (which is the only way I know to be certain) so I left him in the tank. Tonight he came out of his shell for the first time since Sunday, and peered at me briefly before withdrawing into it again. So (obviously, LOL) he's NOT dead. But he hasn't moved or eaten for days. He doesn't look injured and it's not like he fell onto a hard floor or cracked his shell. He just floated to the floor of the tank when he fell off the hood. The other snail, whose presence in the tank is also a mystery (I don't know how he got in there) hides most of the time and I rarely see him, but he's grown noticeably since the first time I saw him and is in good health. And the ghost shrimp hides but comes out for meals and seems to be doing fine. Freckles has recovered from his predicament and is doing fine, too. I don't think there's anything funky about the quality of water or anything to explain Scooby's inertia.

Maybe Scooby attached himself to the hood because he was already unwell? ...although I know nothing about snails. I hope he recovers OK.

No idea. He spent a couple of days early on stuck to the tank above the water line, before I moved them into the new tank. Usually when snails hang out near the top or above the water, one of two things is going on -- the water quality is bad or they're laying eggs. But the other snail never goes up there, so it's not the water. Freckles and Spooky seem fine. So something must be wrong with Scooby and figuring out what and how to help him are well nigh impossible.

I asked Zach what the problem could be, and he asked if it's a brand new tank and if you cycled it (put some white cloud minnows or similar fish in, and let good bacteria build for about a week)). He suggested getting a water test done.

I'm still chewing on the idea of a lively snail.

Me too Easttex. Reading about Siobhan's snails has made me quite interested in them.

Mystery snails generally move around quite a bit and attach themselves to the tank and ooze around and Scooby hasn't done that even from the first day.

Yeah, can't hurt to test the water. I hope Scooby is ok!

Scooby passed away several days ago, unfortunately. The stowaway ramshorn that somehow managed to get into Freckles' tank is doing fine, though.

I knew something was wrong, as I said, from the first day. I expected him to just sit there and recover from the stress of being poked into a bag and toted home and all that, but by the next day, he should have been oozing around and doing his snail thing, and he never really did. He'd attach himself to the tank and the slightest disturbance (such as me putting food in for Freckles) and he'd fall off and land on the bottom and just sit there for hours not moving.

Sorry to hear about Scooby. It sounds like he was already sick.

I believe my last ghost shrimp has died, too. I haven't seen him for days, no matter how hard I look, and he always appeared for meals. I think I'll stick to ramshorn snails. They're more adaptable and hardy.

Sorry to hear about the ghost shrimp as well! I used to have four bamboo shrimp but they have died off over the years and I only have one of them left at this point. Not sure how the fragility of bamboo shrimp compares to ghost shrimp though... they certainly seem more armored.
