It's been a month since Pico's appointment with the avian specialist, so here's a quick update: For the first couple of weeks of taking the Interferon (an anti-viral medication) Pico seemed to perk up. He wasn't as wobbly, and he was more vocal. But still blind. For the last couple of weeks he has become more wobbly again, but he has remained more vocal... Dr. Ferguson called this evening for an update, and when I told her that he hasn't really improved she said "Well. That's not what I had hoped to hear." She also said "I have to tell you, I cannot get over how TOUGH this little guy is!" Tomorrow she will call in the prescription for the Celebrex and in a couple weeks he'll get his follow-up blood work done.

Well I'm sorry to hear that it hasn't really improved, but glad to hear that he's still fighting the good fight. Go Pico! I hope the good doctor can figure this out.

I was wondering how little Pico was doing. Hope the next round of medication will get him feeling better. It seems like a positive sign that he's been more vocal, since parrots who don't feel well typically don't feel much like talking.

Pico had another seizure on Saturday, but it didn't last as long as the first one. I put him on the heating pad right away, and that helped.
He has an appointment with yet another new vet tomorrow, because his regular vet is out on medical leave due to an injury.
He will have his follow up blood work done, and maybe this new vet will have some insight. We'll see what happens.
Zach and I are starting to wonder about Pico's quality of life. I can't tell if he's happy a lot of the time.

Poor little guy. I hope this new vet might have some new ideas.

Hang in there Dani. As long as he is not in any pain, just keep going. I was surprised how much stuff the blood work showed up on my 3 so, hopefully, there might be an answer in the results. Seizures are not nice to witness in any species. We had a dog who had seizures - everyone else would walk away until the seizure was over - I would sit beside him, pat him gently and talk to him so he knew there was someone there. If you are a warm person, you can gently hold him and put him close to your heart. If you are a cold person (and I am talking body temperature here), pop him on the heat pad.

Jan makes a good point. It's hard to define quality of life, but if he isn't in pain and he's still fighting, hang in there for him! I learned my lesson with my father. The will to live is so strong that even a life with so many limitations that you can't imagine living that way can be valuable to the individual. Of course, it's easier to figure out when the individual can speak for himself.

I'm in the process of figuring out how to fashion a "birdy bag", so I can carry Pico on my body while I'm doing chores around the house (keeping him safe from falls, the dog, and the cat), and possibly running errands outside the house (I have to talk to Dr. Ferguson about that).
Speaking of Dr. Ferguson, Pico has an appointment with her on Wednesday of next week. As I mentioned, his regular vet is out on medical leave, so I had made an appointment for this morning with a different vet. She called me this morning to ask about his condition, because she is not an avian specialist, she only has an interest in birds and really did not feel comfortable treating Pico because his case is rather complicated. I'm really impressed that she cared so much, and knew her limitations. So, Pico will get his follow-up blood work done with Dr. Ferguson.

I like the idea of a birdy bag I definitely want to see pictures of that once it's up and running Sounds like Dr. Ferguson is a solid person at the very least.

Pico had his first dose of Celebrex this evening. It's strawberry flavored, and he loves it! LOL I'll definitely take pictures of the birdy bag process.

Dani, I used to "wear" baby possums to work. Made a pouch and stuck it in my bra. It was hysterical when the animal would sneeze and people didn't know where the sound came from. Would love to see a pic of the birdie bag as I might be able to use it for Shah seeing as I want to take him out a lot more. Good luck to Pico - I really hope he gets fixed up - he is such a special little guy.
