Hi everyone! I've been doing my birdy research for a few months now, and put a deposit on a Quaker back in August. I got an email a week ago from the breeder with pics of the newly hatched babies, so now counting down until my new buddy can come home! I've bought some toys already, and stainless steel bowls to replace the plastic ones in the cage (still to purchase). The DNA certificates should be ready about the 9th of Dec, so I have at last till then to wait!!!
i hope to read up more on Quakers until then, and hopefully decide on a name!
cheers,
Tim

G'day Tim, from another Aussie (Melbourne). Which part are you from? You'll have a great time on this forum; the people are fantastic and always willing to help with any question you have. It's really exciting waiting for your new friend to arrive, isn't it? We got Bonnie from a breeder near Pakenham and we were really impatient! Hope you enjoy reading up and being part of the forum.

Thanks biteybird! I'm from Epping, so northern suburbs I found a breeder about 10 minutes from home who seems really good, and I've heard good things about the one in Pakenham too. It's gonna be a hard few weeks that's for sure haha!

Wow, small world, I'm in Northern suburbs too (Watsonia). Quakers seem to be 'taking off' in Australia now, but it took quite a while...I've found most people don't know what they are. Good that you have a reputable breeder. I bought a cage package from mine that included a big cage and a sleeping cage, so that might be worth considering, as they both came with a couple of toys, sleeping/happy huts and stainless steel bowls.

Hehe just down the road!! Yes, agreed. Lots of people know Loris, Cockies and Tiels, but Quakers and to a lesser extent Conures seem to be unknowns! And I've found that going to a breeder seems to be a double edged sword . They rear and do the initial training, but don't allow you to visit beforehand (at least all the ones I spoke to). I haven't even seen a Quaker in real life yet!! All the bird shops I've seen every other species we have in Australia though. I'm taking a trip to Fish and Feather tomorrow, just so I can get some birdy contact to tide me over

Hello Tim and welcome to the forum. You have picked a good place to learn a lot about quakers. The folks here are always willing to answer any questions you might have. When I got my Quaker I thought I had read enough about them to understand their needs however, it was the people on this forum that taught me more than the books did.
I am sure you are going to have a lot of fun with your newbie. They are quite the little creatures. One moment they can purr like a kitten and then they can also bite very hard to show their disapproval. They eat quite the variety of food and their favorite toy will probably be you.
Best wishes and I hope all goes well.

Welcome! I always like to read of people doing their research before purchasing a parrot. I wish that was a legal requirement before purchasing one (wouldn't that be great?).
Feel free to ask any questions you may have, we have a very knowledgeable bunch here! Looking forward to seeing pics of your new best friend!

Hi Tim, welcome to the forum. I lived in Castle Hill for a number of years but now at Portland (near Lithgow). I got Shah from Birdsville (they were at Rosebery then) and agree that they are a little known bird in Australia. We all help and support each other on this forum so please ask any questions you have once you get your baby home.

Welcome timneh! Nice to meet you (albeit virtually), I became a quaker-owned human last November and this forum has been an invaluable resource, from helping me with behavioural issues (puberty happens to birds too!) and advice about feeding to general chatter, reassurance and celebration of our mad little darlings. It's hard work being a guardian to a quaker, but they are dear little things!

What a cute little fella he is. Have you thought of a name yet? You are going to have so much fun with him. Now be patient and don't take him home before it is time. Let the breeder finish the hand raising. Once they begin to eat seeds... they are ready to go.
Best wishes. His color is awesome.

He looks gorgeous. Shah was 5 months when I got him so I never saw him as a chick. Thanks for posting the photo of him.
