Glad to hear you're doing okay. I'll be curious to know what you end up deciding to do. I've never heard of that iPad app. I'll have to check that one out. How's Allie doing with all of this?

It's hard to be sure, Aaron, but I think Allie may be just happy to have me back giving her more of my attention. I can't tell if she misses Peppy's company or not. Just after he died, I showed him to her, hoping that would help her figure out why he disappeared, but again, I'm can't be sure she took it in.
I'm playing a bird songs CD right now for her and it is a lot of fun to watch. She's paying rapt attention. I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow I hear she's added a few of them to her repertoire.

I'm sure she appreciates the additional attention. What parrot doesn't want more attention, right? I guess her and Peppy didn't directly interact much, but I thought perhaps she would miss chattering with him. Her reaction to the bird songs CD sounds very cute.

if you have some nice wood to use and are thinking of doing something with a picture, why not put them together! You can put pictures on wood too!

I have experimented with transferring photos to wood, but haven't been completely satisfied with the results. I wanted to take old-fashioned chicken posters and transfer then to slats of old wood. I put transfer gel on wood and laid a fresh copy of the poster on it. After a day, I removed the paper and slathered the wood with Mod Podge. For the practice, I used new pine. I knew if I wasn't happy with it there, the old wood would be worse, so I wound up decoupaging instead. Maybe there is a better technique.
I have so many Peppy things I want to keep that the box idea made a lot of sense. I know from making a nestbox out of oak how difficult it can be to work with hardwoods, given my skills and equipment, but I want to do something with bird's eye maple. Years ago, when one of my birds died, someone gave me a hand-crafted pen in that wood, and it's beautiful. I looked around for unfinished boxes, and didn't find anything with the right dimensions. So the current plan is to make a pine box myself, and then use bird's eye maple veneer, at least on the top.

Hope things are getting a little easier, easttex. Am really glad you have Allie to keep you company and I think l the box idea as a momento is lovely. Have you tried seeing if there are any craftsmen in your area who would be willing to take a commission? If not, could a pot work? Perhaps see if you can find a potter?

Thanks, beccilouise. I miss Peppy every day. Though I know it's the reaction of a child, sometimes I wish, hard, that I could have him back. Allie is a comfort.
I bought a very nice pine board a few days ago, and plan to make the box myself. Part of the therapy, I think. I haven't settled on all the details - exact dimensions; do I want to use stain, and if I do, do I make the woods contrast or stain the veneer also; maybe use just a lacquer, etc. I'm working out now how to apply the veneer.

Hi Easttex, glad you're still willing to talk to us Forum people despite your grief...thank you. The pine board sounds nice! I'm sure whatever you decide to do with it will work out very well.

Hi Easttex, whatever you decide will be fine and it will have special meaning because you have made it for him. It will be a labour of love.

I don't think wanting peppy back is the reaction of a child at all! I think I would feel the same. A pine box sounds absolutely brilliant. I'm also looking forward to seeing it and, like everyone else, I'm really happy you're still here talking and sharing with us. Many warm thoughts. Xx

We're happy to have you stay with us on the Forum. I don't think you ever completely stop missing a parrot you've lost. After more than 6 years, I miss George the YCA every day. It does become easier in time to adjust to not having them with you though. As I've said before, all my memories of George help me to feel that, in a way, he is still with me. Ralph's companionship has helped me a lot too, as I know Allie helps you.
