Someone left a door open and Shah took off. I have been around the streets calling him - heard him a couple of times but then nothing. I am sick to my stomach. Have rung the local vets and will put posters around tomorrow. But I don't have a good feeling about it and it is very distressing to think of him out there tonight with all the predatory birds waiting to get him.

Oh no . Thinking about you and Shah. I can't imagine how you must feel. I don't know that it will help, but I read a story somewhere that someone left their birds cage outside over night when their bird escaped. The next morning the bird was waiting on top of the cage.

Oh, Jan, I was hoping my eyes were playing tricks on me when I saw the subject. And I hope you have him back already. I think Zim's idea is a good one. I would try to place the cage on the roof, but if that's not practical, near the door he flew out. If spooked, he might have flown a ways, so enlisting a lot of people to watch out for him could help. Same thing with offering a reward. If you have any idea of the area he might be in, I'd keep searching after dark with a flashlight. He's less likely to fly off then. You can register him here www.911parrotalert.com. There are other organizations that do the same thing, but I've seen this one pop up more often than any others. I'll be thinking about you both on my drive this morning, and hope to see good news later. Don't give up!

Jan, I'm so sorry! This is horrible, I can't imagine how you must be feeling. Another trick I heard that worked was to play recordings of the parrot vocalising near the house. If you have any videos of Shah singing and chirping or squawking, it might help to guide him home. He may yet come back! I've heard stories of birdies reunited with their owners after months or even a year. Here's to hoping you won't have to wait anywhere near that long.

Oh no! I agree with Easttex 911parrotalert is the best, I just posted on it to help a lady find a bird in our area last night. I plan on heading out to help her look today. They will give you lots of advice and templates for flyers. Get up just before sunrise tomorrow and start walking around calling before it gets too noisy. I really feel for you and hope you find Shah! Big hugs!

My stomach is just sick too. One lady I know who had lost her quaker found him the next day in the tall grass. She thought he would be in a tree or something high up.... but he was in the grass. Keep your eyes peeled... I am sending my prayers your way.
When my love birds got away, they did come back but I never lost sight of them. I carried their cage everywhere they went and when I was ready to give up... they got hungry. Cage = Food. I was very lucky.

Oh, Jan.... I'm so sorry to hear this... What a complete and utter nightmare. Both my wife and I have regular nightmares about Cupcake flying away... I don't know what we'd do if it actually happened. It sounds like the others have given you some good ideas. I'm not sure what else to suggest.
My whole family will be praying for you both... I really hope he turns up!!

Oh my goodness I'm so sorry Jan! I saw the thread title and hoped I had misread it. I've worried about this happening some day with one of my birds. I truly hope you find Shah. All I can say is get the word out everywhere you can so if someone finds him they hopefully will have heard about him and be able to return him to you. Quakers are tough little buggers, I'm sure he'll be alright.

You have got your wish Sharyn. After wandering the streets just before sunrise, going to work to do posters, going to the doctor as I am quite ill and then wandering the streets again calling his name, talking to people and sticking up posters, he finally responded. Went to 3 houses (the people let me go into their backyards) and finally located where he was. I banged and banged on the door - the poor guy was a shift worker and not impressed. He said my bird wasn't there but to go around the back anyway. He WAS there - very low down in some plants near the pool. A fence separated him from 2 dogs. The guy had wondered why the dogs were barking all night. I cant tell you how happy I am - he keeps calling me Monkey Breath - it is like music to my ears. I never thought I would see him again. I have spoken to the vet who has told me what to do with him - like not give him too much food - but he sure is hungry. The vet is on standby in case something goes wrong but I think he should be okay now he is home. Thanks everyone for all your advice, good wishes and support. I really think there is an angel looking after Shah and I.
