it's a weird thing isn't it? I've read so many articles that say 'you MUST clip your bird!' and so many that say 'clipping your bird is so cruel!' but I really think it massively depends on the bird, the owner and the situation. If the parrot having full flight puts him in danger, there's no question is there? I cannot believe you got him back. I'm SO glad! Maya has a playstand on wheels and she gets carried around on it like a sultan on a sedan chair! She loves it. It's nice as well cos it means she gets to see different parts of the house and she can be with me while I'm writing. She normally sits on my shoulder and plays with her ball while I write too, but this means she can have more toys at her disposal for when we're not directly playing or training

It really does depend on the situation. We can't imagine having Cupcake clipped, and I believe she's never once hit a mirror or a window... but I can *totally* understand why some people clip their birds. Because Cupcake's flight is such an integral part of her personality, we will probably never even consider clipping her... but as a result, I also am afraid to move out of this apartment, because she's so adept at navigating it, and as far as the risk of her flying out an open door goes, it is very low. Moving her to a new home would have to be a very careful and measured practice, with all new risks and lots of wildcards. We are really starting to outgrow this place though, so I suspect it will need to be addressed sooner or later. I'm sure we'll figure it out when the time comes, but the concept inspires anxiety in me All of that said, I adore having Cupcake flighted, and I hope I never regret it... I probably won't, as this is just what feels right for this bird. I love her little independent personality. But there's no question that it involves more danger. Cupcake is a master of squeaking out of the way when somebody accidentally closes a door that she is sitting on top of. It doesn't really happen with us any more, but all it takes is an untrained guest that isn't hyperaware of the bird's location, and it can easily happen. One of many hazards.

I can only imagine what you went through loosing Shah. When I lost my love birds I felt totally responsible and devastated. They were outside in their closed cage but a huge wind whipped through and the cage toppled over and the lid came off. I loved to watch them fly around the house and they would find anything they could tear up... make long strips...tuck it under their feathers... and fly back to the cage to build a nest. Of course only half of their torn paper would make it to the nest. The rest was for me to pick up.
The love birds were not hand raised therefore, things were very different than having Oscar. Oscar is like my little boy. He cannot stand not being with me...he waits for me to take him on his daily routine of visiting the closets, or his condo... or just relaxing with me on the couch.
I have spoiled him like mothers spoil their grand children and give into every whim of his. Shame on me... but I love it. With him not flying, truly makes both of our lives more pleasant. He does not attack anyone nor does he turn my house into a total disaster (remember he does not stay in his cage at all). Being retired there is almost always someone here.
Unfortunately, he is in heat as spring is in the air and so I gave him a sock... lol... I wrapped it around one of the branches in his play cage... and I have seen him go in there and do his thing. (least it is not on me). I have to laugh to myself when I think of it... need a woman... here is a sock... close enough... lol lol.
Anyway... I am just super duper happy that Shah made it home safe and sound. I am sure it will take a few days to over come her ordeal and for you as well. Best wishes to all.
