I got him up a lot earlier this afternoon and have only just popped him into bed. He just wanted to have his scritches and snuggle up. I would say he has been through quite an ordeal - no food and 2 dogs barking at him all night and is now happy to be back at home with Pippin and Spike. I have had to remove some food from his cage as he just wants to eat constantly. I will pop him back on his normal food tomorrow morning. I still cant believe he is back home. I love that little guy so much and feel extremely lucky that I found him when I did.

Thanks everyone for all your good wishes. Shah spent quite a bit of time giving me kisses this morning and we had lots of little snuggles. He was back to his normal self this afternoon - demanding a bath - calling out just to make sure I was around. I clipped his wings tonight. He didn't sleep very well last night so am hoping he does better tonight. He doesn't want to go into his happy hutch to sleep. This is very unusual for him. I am still keeping a close eye on him and will pop him over to the vet if I suspect anything. I still cant believe he is back home.

I can't believe you found him...what are the odds of that? It's amazing! Hopefully this will give him a new appreciation of his human slave (although it may not last long). This whole situation is a good example of why clipping is best for some birds in certain situations (e.g., if you are sharing a place - at least when you retire to your own country digs you will be the only one to control whether doors are open/closed). Go Shah & 'Monkey Breath'!

Yeah, this story makes me never want to move out of our apartment. We have the benefit of having only one door to the outside that is hard to get to because we have plants in front of it... and the front door goes to an indoor hallway. Cupcake has never attempted to fly into the hallway, despite the door being open in front of her all the time... but still, it's nice having that safeguard... While we might find ourselves chasing her around the building, at least the chances of her actually getting outside are very slim (she'd have to be passing a courtyard door while someone was opening it). I wonder if we'll ever move

I am so happy he is ok. I genuinely can't imagine what I would do if I lost Maya, apart from collapse into a puddle on the floor and howl with terror. I've never had a situation like this, and have not owned a parrot for nearly as long as you have, Jan, so my input and helpfulness is very limited, but I guess he's still suffering a little bit of trauma from his time away, which might be the reason for his modified behaviour. I have every confidence he will be ok, whether or not he needs a vet. He is extremely lucky to have a human like you. With regards to wing clipping, I so wanted to be able to let Maya's feathers grow out at her next moult, but there have just been so many occasions recently where she's spooked and flown into a window or a mirror. Luckily, her clipped wings have meant that she just kind of slides to the floor and doesn't hurt herself, but it makes me realise I am going to have to clip her at least a little bit, otherwise she is going to break her neck. It makes me really sad, but I'd rather have a clipped bird than a dead one, and I think biteybird is right, clipping just suits some birds in human-living situations. I'd love to have Maya as a flighted bird, but I'm not going to do anything that puts her in danger. I guess a similar thing can be said for Shah in this situation. If others around him are irresponsible, it can put him in danger. I'm so relieved you got him back

Shah is going through the moult and I didn't notice that he had grown some flight feathers back in - which is my responsibility to check. So, even though the door was left open, if I had have been more aware of what his flight feathers were doing, he wouldn't have taken off. I cant tell you the sense of euphoria when I found him - I still look at him and don't believe he is back with me. My cockatiels are fully flighted and I only let them out in one room with the curtains closed. They do fly into windows if they get away from me and it is horrific to hear the bang when they hit the glass. I think it is up to everyone to decide what is best for their bird in their home situation. Shah has always been clipped - I bought him like that. When I move in July, I will be using a bird stand on wheels to move him from room to room so he can spend a good part of his day with me. His wings will remain clipped for his own safety.
