Have you contacted the local animal welfare groups, vets., etc? You can put an advert in the local paper. It is worth it. A few years ago I had a cockatiel who flew away and did mail box drops, contacted all sorts of people and put a big ad in the local paper. It was the ad in the paper that got her returned to me. Don't give up hope but you have to contact as many people as you can in the hope of locating her. Good luck.

I would take her to the vet as soon as you can. Please let us know how you go.

Pippin continues to improve, however, he has an appt with the bird vet on Sat morning. I have had him for 12 of his 14 years and I want to keep him in tip top condition.

No dog or cat can be trusted with birds. You will need to supervise them but let me warn you, it only takes a split second for disaster to strike. I have a dog who appears to tolerate the birds but I never have the dog in the same room when the birds are loose. Plus she likes to chase the birds in the backyard so I don't trust her. Some of the people on this forum do have dogs that get along with birds and I am sure they will be along shortly to give their views.

Well, I felt I knew more than the vet. She was trying to tell me it was diet and that I should see a bird vet. I told her that he was on a diet given to me by a bird vet. It was a bloody waste of time. However, she did say that apart from the weight loss, he was in good condition. His eyes were bright and he wasn't puffed up. He certainly looked a bit better tonight. I will speak to the expensive bird vet as he is only 15 minutes away and get him to run all the tests he needs to. I don't usually go to him because of the cost (it usually runs to hundreds of dollars) but I think the tests will need to be done. I usually go to another bird vet who is 40 minutes away but the closer vet does have a card on Pippin so at least there is something to compare the tests to. Thanks everyone for your interest. He is such a sweet little boy and I want to do everything I can to ensure he makes at least 20 years of age.

I have a mutilator. The vet gives me an ointment called F10 and gives Shah an antibiotic injection every week for 3 weeks. I also get him to bathe in warm water with aloe vera in it. You cannot give this behaviour any attention as it encourages the bird to keep doing it. You also need to be very careful about your stress levels as Aidan will pick it up. I wouldnt be using any sort of oil on a bird's skin - the skin is very fragile and an oil is just too much for it. I also give Shah camomile tea to drink (I break it down so it isnt too strong - get an organic one and make sure it doesnt have any caffeine in it) or Rescue Remedy drops in his water (non alcohol kind). I use Tellington Touch on him - but any kind of massage where you are both relaxed will work. I change his routine around and make sure we have lots of fun - so lots of laughing, singing, talking and even dancing. It appears that Shah's episodes are caused by hormones - although I cant say that I am 100% sure. All Shah's episodes have taken 3 months to improve. Just a word about the collar - the first time he mutilated, the vet put a small elizabethan collar on him - what a disaster. So he made a flat collar out of the end of a sellotape roll - which Shah hated but it kept his beak off the wound. We havent used any sort of collar since the first time. Keep asking questions - we will all help and support you through this. I know how frustrating and depressing this can be and that sick feeling you get leaving the bird and then again when you come home as you dont know what you are going to find.

What a shame that it is not Rio. But how lucky is Ivy to have found you? Hopefully Rio has found a home with someone else.

I am really worried about him. Will try and get an earlier appointment today. He is eating but it is a bit over the top. His feathers look rough and he has lost weight. He was on his branch this morning and tried to attack me when I cleaned the cage - which he sometimes does. I feel sick thinking about it. I didnt want to come to work this morning but I have a lot of urgent things to do so will clear them out and get him to the vet. Easttex, it is today now (7.21 am) - not sure of the time difference but I think we are a few hours ahead of the US so it is probably night time there (last night in our time).

Ummmmm, I didnt want to say anything about Central Australia and Northern Territory. Isnt getting old fun? That is really interesting about the permits - I had no idea. As to Bonnie, make sure no one is stressed when they are near her otherwise she will pick it up and act accordingly. Shah has hand hating days. It is usually my right hand that he attacks. I cannot play with him using that hand when he is in a hand-hating mood. I have no idea why he does it and there is no warning of the attack. And he is like it for the rest of play time - put that right hand near him and he launches himself at it with beak open, ready for action

Pippin was on the floor of the cage when I got the birds up this morning. He was fluffed up. I checked him out and his keel is a bit sharp. He has had about 3 moults in the last 3 months. He is eating and poos seem to be okay. I cant get him to a bird vet before Saturday so rang the local vet who said they have vets that can look at birds but not bird vets as such. They will do any tests that are needed (like a poo test) so he is off to the vet tomorrow night at 5.45pm. He would be the last animal I expect to get sick. He is always so healthy and robust. Hopefully it is nothing major and just needs antibiotics. I hate that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach whenever any of the animals get sick.

Biteybird, I climbed Ayers Rock (as it was known then) - it was quite an experience. Kings Canyon was pretty spectacular as well. You will have a great time. The people are amazing once you realise they dont go at the speed of city folk. They are welcoming and very chatty - like they have known you for years. I wasnt aware you had to get a special permit for Bonnie - how did you find out about it? It's good to know if I ever travel with Shah - like that's going to happen - not I expect to see plenty of photos of Bonnie at Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, etc. I know you will have a great time and meet lots of interesting people along the way.

I really think it is up to the person to decide if they want to pursue further treatment or not. My sister had a DNR which was very hard when she went into the last stages of cancer - but it was her wish. We had to make the choice for our mother (who died 6 months after my sister) - but were guided by the doctors - we knew there was no hope of recovery. As Siobhan says, doctors and vets wont make these decisions for you but if you ask what would they do if they were in the situation, you will usually get a helpful response. I had a pet rat called Michael - he came to me in strange circumstances - he actually chose me and would not go to anyone else. He would sleep on my pillow at night. He never acted like a rat. When I looked into his eyes, they looked old - and more human than rat. He was a very special animal and I will never forget him. When his time was up, I wouldnt accept it and made him live in misery for another 2 weeks. While I feel awful for doing that to him, it taught me so much - animals know when their time is up and we have to respect their choice to leave us.

Well, Shah's newfound niceness finished tonight when I got severely beak bashed and I don't know what I did Where are you going to in Central Australia? I went on a coach tour many, many, many years ago and I loved NT - especially Mataranka but I think it is a bit touristy now. They had one hot spring for humans which was divine. Found another hot spring where the crocs hung out - didn't go into that one At night we would hang out by a huge campfire telling stories and just generally having a great time. Don't worry about Bonnie too much - think she will be fine once her surroundings change and she gets on the road!
