Spike got a glowing report from the vet today. Apart from lack of Vitamin D, she is in perfect health. She and Pippin have spent a bit of time in the sun today so neither of them should get sick (again). They love it so am going to put in a bath in their outside cage so they can splash around if they feel the need.

Unfortunately Shah is very ill. His blood work came back and it is not so good. He is staying overnight at the vet and comes home for a day and then off again to the vet on Thursday and Friday. This could go on for a number of weeks. His stomach is badly inflamed, he is not absorbing nutrients from food and he is in discomfort. I feel really bad about this - there is no use telling me not to bash myself up - I really missed this one and Shah has been suffering because of it. I have spent a couple of hours cleaning his cage (I managed to get it outside but it was a struggle) so it is now sitting in the sun. Have moved out a lot of rubbish from it - he wont be pleased. The house is so quiet without him but I know he is in the best place at the moment. I have decided to take him away for a weekend once he is better. Wont go too far - probably stay where Izzie is agisted. I really am a bad parront - but this wont ever occur again. In future I am not going to worry about the money - if the bird is sick, then it goes to where the vet can instantly diagnose and has the equipment to confirm the diagnosis.

I remember Coober Pedy well. Hated the place. The dust is so fine that it gets everywhere. And the underground houses were a new experience is claustrophobia. We had to buy water. But I had the best pizza I have ever eaten from a pizza place there Hope you are enjoying your trip. I bet it was Bonnie that you could hear. It is amazing how far their screeching carries.

Shah had a band on each leg when I got him. He fussed over them so had them removed by the vet.

That's hysterical Good job Biteybird. I wonder what is going on in her mind for her to do that so regularly.

I remember taking Shah everywhere with me. Once he gets better, I must start taking him out again. Dog in back of car - bird in front

Today I felt so bad especially about Shah. Because I didn't want to spend the money, I took him to a cheaper vet (who is also a bird vet) when he started mutilating. I just feel that I have put him through 3 years of discomfort because I didn't want to spend the money on him. I was supposed to go to a workshop today but cancelled it and took my dog Emma to see Izzie who I haven't seen for 2 weeks. It was lovely spending time with the pony and the dog and come home and spend some time with the birds. Poor Shah starts his treatment tomorrow. I really feel I have let him down badly but have learnt a very important lesson from this and it wont happen again - to any of my animal buddies.

Pippin has passed the blockage, however, his Vitamin D is very low (I am sitting in the winter sun with him and Spike). That deficiency caused him to do certain things - one of which was to eat the newspaper (which he has never done before). Spike is a girl - she appears to be okay. The vet was very taken by her appearance - she is a very pretty bird. I am a bit disappointed she is a girl as I just don't want to go through the egg saga again. She is definitely not interested in Pippin as a mate - he doesn't feel the same way Now to Shah. The vet picked up just by looking at him that where he mutilates on the neck is exactly where his crop is - he said he thought he might be getting reflux. The xray showed that he also has a blockage but it has been there for a long time. Yep, you guessed it - he has reflux in the crop. I mentioned to him that Shah is aggro and unhappy and he said that is because he is in some discomfort. He goes back to the vet next week for the same treatment as Pippin got but, as he is in a little worse state, he will have to go back at least another 2-3 times next week (there go my holidays). Pippin cost me A$850 last week and the 3 of them cost A$1350 this week. There is still Shah's vet trips next week to add to it. And I thought the pony would be expensive However, I am absolutely thrilled that we have got to the bottom on Shah's mutilating behaviour and that all birds are being brought back to good health - you cant put a price on that. Nor can you put a price on getting back that lovely little quaker that I had - no more Mr Grumpy.

I got mauled by Shah again tonight. He gave no warning and went berko on my thumb which is still hurting. So I didn't talk to him which drove him crazy. He ended up giving me kisses at which time I started talking to him. Cupcake sounds like she just had an off day. She does seem to be a sweet little girl.

Whispering doesnt work on any of my birds. They just completely ignore me and continue screaming

I have to take the 2 cockatiels and Shah to the vet tomorrow. My ears will, no doubt, fall off my head with the screaming and complaining in the car. I have got myself really stressed out about it. I have to be there at 8.30am and depending on whether Pippin has passed the blockage or not, depends on whether I do 2 trips taking 1 cockatiel and 1 quaker home and come back later to get Pippin. Just the thought of the noise in the car is really freaking me out as it really hurts my head listening to that pitch of screaming in a confined space. The drive should only take 15-20 minutes.
