Aaron, welcome to my world. Hopefully this will pass for you and Cupcake will revert to her usual, sweet self - it never really passes for me

Hi Julianna, your suspicions on why there are very few birds may be correct. There have been some articles in our newspapers about cats and dogs being used as food - truly distressing. Once I move next year, I will be living by myself which means I will have complete control of my diet and will probably go vegan. With all the reports of the cruelty animals are suffering in abbattoirs I cant justify eating meat for much longer.

Welcome back. Must have been a great feeling knowing that Oscar remembered you and was actually pleased to see you. Glad you enjoyed your time in China.

That's great news Aaron. Hopefully the cider vinegar will clear up the problem. Kisses to Cupcake.

I am glad she is going to see the vet. I have had vast experience with antibiotics - both human and animal. There is simply nothing else that will clear an infection (if she has one). I am currently watching the transformation with Spike as Pippin's antibiotics are in the drinking water - he is putting on weight and is brighter which means he probably has a low grade infection. I realise that antibiotics can be over-prescribed in humans but for animals there is simply no other choice. By the time the bird presents with a problem, you have limited time to fix it. Explain your concerns to the vet and see what he can come up with. If she does need antibiotics try and get one that you can give in her water. Good luck with her and please let us know how you go at the vet.

Pippin's cultures and blood test results showed up today. There are a few things wrong but they are mild and related to the blockage. The vet did say that his immune system was very weak so will take him a while to get better. He is acting as normal and, as he is a very robust bird, think he may recover sooner than expected. The vet did say that it was a good thing that I bought him in when I did. Shah is back to his normal, obnoxious self so it is business as usual.

Hi Aaron, Pippin did this a few years back. He had a crop infection. I am not saying this is the problem with Cupcake but I would get her to the vet. After my recent scare with Pippin I wouldnt take any chances. As you know, birds are very good at covering illness. There may be something else going on. It is not worth the risk of waiting to see if anything else presents.

Well, Mr Personality was in a right tizz this morning. Yelling at me and demanding to be taken out of the cage which I did and got beak bashed for my efforts. On the way to work I had an "ah-ha" moment. I changed his rope ladder on Saturday night as the other one was worn out and old. So he has a ladder that looks exactly the same except it is WHITE and not an off white colour due to washing and age. I think that is what is causing the aggro. He hates any changes in his cage.

Shah has been a horror all day. When it was play time tonight he wouldn't stop biting and beak bashing me. Yep, facing the joy of hormones again. Even though I have put him to bed, if he hears my voice, he screams out. Pippin's feathers are a little closer to his body tonight and not quite as ruffled and Spike seems to be okay after his encounters with the window. Moved the newspaper out of the cockatiels' cage today so am happy that we wont have a repeat of this problem again. Thanks everyone for your good wishes for Pippin's recovery. I am really happy with his progress tonight - he is such a lovely bird. He has a sense of humour and doesn't suffer from moods like you know who. All he asks for is his head scratched - which drives Shah insane. So, to get my attention, he calls out "gotta kiss" as he knows I will get him out of his cage and kiss him and leave his Nemesis, Pippin, alone. Quakers are such jealous little critters

Flushing is just like drenching. They syringe liquid down the throat to help remove the blockage. I had it done once when Rebel was egg bound and it worked quite well. When I was changing the cockatiels cage around yesterday, Spike flew out and hit the window twice. He has a slightly swollen head and some missing feathers so keeping a close eye on him at the moment. Shah is screaming for me all the time - I don't know why - I spend time with him and he seems fine and then pop him back in his cage and he starts screaming again. He may be upset that the cockatiels' cage is changed around. At least the dog isn't giving me a hard time

What a morning. As soon as the vet saw him, he said he had a calcium deficiency and that he thought there might be something wrong with his gut so took an xray and, sure enough, he has a blockage in the gizzard from newspaper. He said he has muscle weakness as he hasn't been receiving much nutrition. So he is on an antibiotic and flagyl as well as some stuff I already have here. He put him on stewed apples as well. Next week he will be "flushed" out to clear the paper. Shah and Spike will be going next week for their xrays (Pippin has another one then) to make sure they don't have impactions. The blood test results and pathology results will come back on Monday. It cost a small fortune but, after being told what was wrong before he even picked up the bird was pretty spectacular. I am so glad I didn't believe Pippin's improvement. The vet said that we have caught it relatively early - if I had of let it go, it would have been pretty bad and possibly fatal.

Manuka honey is supposed to be the best healing honey. My father always used honey on wounds (he would bandage the wound after applying honey) but I have no knowledge of anyone using it on animals.

Pippin is still improving. You would never think that he had been ill earlier in the week. I will be glad to see the vet tomorrow to make sure there is nothing lurking around.

As Easttex says, it may be a bit of nerve damage. Let us know how you go with the vet.
