He's still the same. He really likes his birdy buddy, I often saw him sitting next to it during the day. When he's awake he's really chatty and seems cheerful, which is really good. I love this little bird, so much!

Siobhan, please don't feel dumb or beat yourself up. You found the problem, and fixed it. I'm sure that in no time Trixie will be back to her normal, steady self.

To check for red mites, you can cover her cage with a white sheet at night, and in the morning you'll see tiny specks on the sheet.

That all sounds reassuring.

We tried to give Conan some baytril, but he wasn't having it. You might have better luck with Trixie, since she's somewhat used to you handling her.
Do you want me to mention this to Pico's breeder? She also breeds finches...

I agree that you should look into getting a second opinion. My vet was hesitant to treat Pico, but she called several avian specialists (from all over western Washington) until she got the answers she needed.

That's the high shelf in our guest room closet, and yes he's hanging upside down!

Uh oh, you'd better hope he doesn't start reading Julianna's posts....he'll be crying wolf before you know it, just to make you pay attention! This is what happened a couple years ago, when Chewy decided to go exploring....don't ask me how he ended up in this position...LOL

I don't know what it is, but this sounds similar to what Conan was like in the last month before I put him down. Watch her, in case she starts having seizures... I'm sorry.

The captions are what Siobhan wrote on Facebook. Cheap bird toy! Sweet baby. Poor toy. It's doomed. Cue dramatic music. Snuggling with Mama.

One more change....The perch that I had in front of his food dish was an edible perch, and Pico had eaten it down to a small nub...so I took that out and replaced it with a thick wood branch and "showed" that to him. He was hesitant to step onto it, but he did do it...so we'll see how he does. It is much thicker and smoother than the other perch, so hopefully he won't have problems with it...but I have to buy Chewy some food today, so I might pick up a smaller, more textured perch for Pico...

It's next to his ladder, and he really likes to sit on top of it. So that's why I'm leaving it.

I'm going to leave it in his cage, and have secured it so it can't swing when he bumps it.

Well, hmm....
According to the websites I've looked at, you're not supposed to move anything in the cage of a blind bird (makes sense)...but in his sleep, Pico accidentally bumped a very lightweight balsa toy that has been there for a long time, and it started swinging and terrified the poor guy.
Can I safely remove it, without upsetting Pico too much??
