Pippin was on the floor of the cage when I got the birds up this morning. He was fluffed up. I checked him out and his keel is a bit sharp. He has had about 3 moults in the last 3 months. He is eating and poos seem to be okay. I cant get him to a bird vet before Saturday so rang the local vet who said they have vets that can look at birds but not bird vets as such. They will do any tests that are needed (like a poo test) so he is off to the vet tomorrow night at 5.45pm. He would be the last animal I expect to get sick. He is always so healthy and robust. Hopefully it is nothing major and just needs antibiotics. I hate that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach whenever any of the animals get sick.

Oh, man, that feeling is awful. It's hard to concentrate on anything else. I hope he's okay! I get tied up in knots trying to figure the time difference. Is it tomorrow there yet? I think you're in the neighborhood of 18 hours ahead of me. Well, whenever it is, I'm sure you'll post an update.

I am really worried about him. Will try and get an earlier appointment today. He is eating but it is a bit over the top. His feathers look rough and he has lost weight. He was on his branch this morning and tried to attack me when I cleaned the cage - which he sometimes does. I feel sick thinking about it. I didnt want to come to work this morning but I have a lot of urgent things to do so will clear them out and get him to the vet. Easttex, it is today now (7.21 am) - not sure of the time difference but I think we are a few hours ahead of the US so it is probably night time there (last night in our time).

Well, I felt I knew more than the vet. She was trying to tell me it was diet and that I should see a bird vet. I told her that he was on a diet given to me by a bird vet. It was a bloody waste of time. However, she did say that apart from the weight loss, he was in good condition. His eyes were bright and he wasn't puffed up. He certainly looked a bit better tonight. I will speak to the expensive bird vet as he is only 15 minutes away and get him to run all the tests he needs to. I don't usually go to him because of the cost (it usually runs to hundreds of dollars) but I think the tests will need to be done. I usually go to another bird vet who is 40 minutes away but the closer vet does have a card on Pippin so at least there is something to compare the tests to. Thanks everyone for your interest. He is such a sweet little boy and I want to do everything I can to ensure he makes at least 20 years of age.

Hmmm... yeah I agree, I would get those tests done. That seems like a pretty bold statement to make, to say that he was sitting on the floor fluffed up all the sudden because of dietary issues... How could she know for sure without testing? Anyhow, I hope Pippin feels better soon.

Pippin continues to improve, however, he has an appt with the bird vet on Sat morning. I have had him for 12 of his 14 years and I want to keep him in tip top condition.

Pippin is still improving. You would never think that he had been ill earlier in the week. I will be glad to see the vet tomorrow to make sure there is nothing lurking around.

I'm so relieved to hear that Pippin is improving. Dang, it's so hard when our babies are sick and can't tell us what's wrong! I'm sorry the first vet visit was a waste, ugh. Sending healing thoughts to Pippin, and ((((((((((HUGS)))))))))) to you!

What a morning. As soon as the vet saw him, he said he had a calcium deficiency and that he thought there might be something wrong with his gut so took an xray and, sure enough, he has a blockage in the gizzard from newspaper. He said he has muscle weakness as he hasn't been receiving much nutrition. So he is on an antibiotic and flagyl as well as some stuff I already have here. He put him on stewed apples as well. Next week he will be "flushed" out to clear the paper. Shah and Spike will be going next week for their xrays (Pippin has another one then) to make sure they don't have impactions. The blood test results and pathology results will come back on Monday. It cost a small fortune but, after being told what was wrong before he even picked up the bird was pretty spectacular. I am so glad I didn't believe Pippin's improvement. The vet said that we have caught it relatively early - if I had of let it go, it would have been pretty bad and possibly fatal.
