Pico, our 10 month old male Pacific Parrotlet, is sick...or something.
About 2 1/2 weeks ago, I took him to the vet because we noticed that he was sneezing, sitting fluffed up on the bottom of his cage regularly, and sleeping a lot more than usual. She said that he seemed fine, his lungs sounded clear, but said that I may have caught it so early that it wasn't too bad yet. So I did a round of Baytril.
Nothing has changed.
While we were at the vet the first time, one of the vet techs noticed some tiny bugs on the towel in Pico's carrier. The vet came back in and using her microscope, identified them as avian mites. She's been calling around to various specialists in the state, to find out the best way to treat him. On Tuesday we're bringing in all of the birds for a dose of Ivermectin (yes, the horse de-wormer!).
A week after the first appointment I took Pico back in to have some blood work done, because nothing had changed. Everything came back normal. Phew.
Tonight Zach and I noticed that Pico sits and shakes. His whole body shakes. I picked him up from Zach's hand and I said out loud "Is my hand shaking, or is that YOU, Pico???" Zach said it's Pico.
I recently clipped Pico's wings, because he's not good at flying and it was dangerous for him. He kept flying into the walls, and the final straw was when he flew straight UP, hit the ceiling and crashed to the floor. He was fine afterward, but I'm wondering if he may have some brain damage? I'll talk to the vet about this possibility on Tuesday, but what do you all think??

Hi Dani, it might be a neurological problem. Talk to the vet and see what she suggests. Pippin flies into windows from time to time - so far he is fine but my heart leaps into my mouth everytime it happens. Shah's wings are growing in at the moment as I haven't had time to take him to the vet to get them clipped - he took off yesterday and flew into a window. I know when I rescued birds, a lot of them were suffering concussion. All you can do is keep an eye on him and note any changes. Ivermectin is fine for birds. Good luck. Hugs to you and Pico.

His crash landing happened on February 11th, and I clipped him that night.

Interesting - the damage should have shown up way before this. Is he eating anything that might be affecting him - like a houseplant? It really is a mystery. Hang in there Dani. As to Cami, I am sure your friend would like to show you some work with her. Why don't you ask - it might be just what she is looking for.

I've given Ivermectin to chickens, as well as Panacur, and have used Sevin dust on them. It seems like there is very little in the world of pharmacology that has been developed specifically for birds.
I hope Pico is okay. If he is still showing effects after all this time, I would wonder if he might have a minor fracture in his skull. Pure speculation, of course. Is he eating okay?

Yes, that's one of the odd things about this...he's eating and drinking fine, and his poop looks normal.

I am far, far from an expert on this, and sometimes I can use perfectly good logic and still arrive at a totally wrong conclusion, so bear that in mind. But, it seems to me that if there were neurological damage, you would likely see it somewhere in his balance or in some other function of his body, like a dropped wing, for example.

Thank you, everyone! I'm completely stumped, and will let you know what happens on Tuesday and afterward....maybe the mites are causing his symptoms...that would be great, because it can be fixed.

Sorry to hear that Pico hasn't been feeling well. It could be that the shaking is related to the mites. Sending good wishes to Pico for a full recovery. A possible resource for your vet is the Cornell University Animal Health Diagnostic Center Cornell has one of the best avian medicine programs anywhere, and can consult with veterinarians on diagnosing and treating most any problems.

Man, that is some tough stuff for little Pico. It seems like the mites could be the problem... Sadly, I don't really have anything useful to contribute unfortunately, but I will be thinking healthy thoughts for Pico. Get well, little buddy! And hang in there, Dani... Doesn't sound fun for you either

No, it hasn't been much fun, Aaron! But we'll get through this. Today Pico, Taz and Chewy saw the vet today. Unfortunately Zach and I weren't able to talk to her, because she was busy with an emergency, so they took the birds in back and gave them their Ivermectin. We'll go back for another dose in two weeks.
