Hey all, I just wanted to check in again... Things have been extremely busy at work, and I've decided to put some energy back into music production at night, so haven't had a lot of time for other things... Just refamiliarizing myself with all of the complexities of producing has been fairly overwhelming, but fun nonetheless. I hope you are all doing well!! I definitely miss all of you guys. I can hear the sound of a grumpy bird out in the living room, specifically in the manner that means she is ready for bed, so off to begin the bedtime rituals for both girls

Do you have a music production studio? I didn't know you do that stuff...aren't you full of surprises? ?))

Do you have a music production studio? I didn't know you do that stuff...aren't you full of surprises? ?)) I do... in fact, the amount of space taken up by music equipment in our apartment is absurd, considering that I've basically not touched it for half a decade or so... But the room that Cupcake sleeps in is my music studio, and is still full of music equipment. I also have a fairly large DJ booth setup in my living room that rarely gets used... And now a mini studio at my desk in our bedroom as a temporary measure, as setting up the main studio would require getting a new computer, and also having to work around Cupcake's schedule... it's all fairly ridiculous. I've written a lot of music in my life, and it all used to be easy to find on the net, but now it's pretty hard to find. Once I have a site back up, I'll post the link here, although I am not sure when that will happen, as I have a lot to sort out before then I take it that it's a sign of how much better you are feeling! Yes, it's definitely a sign that I'm feeling better that I'm willing to even consider trying to figure all of this out. Music is a part of my life that kind of just fell apart as a result of a number of factors, but primarily health related ones... Historically it has been a huge part of my life. So it's good to be getting back to it, albeit complicated and somewhat emotionally bittersweet. This is the mini-studio I'm working with right now, which is really all I need to do plenty of things, although I am definitely wishing I had my full size keyboard connected to it instead of this little guy. I'll get the main studio resurrected at some point

That's great! Do you have it hooked up to a software program? Years ago I used to use Sibelius, but I didn't have all the MIDI stuff you do & in the end I found it quicker to write everything down on manuscript as it came into my head. But a full-size keyboard would be amazingly fast to just play all the lines in straight away. I think your setup is amazing! Don't worry, you'll sort it all out/streamline your stuff eventually. You might even enjoy it!

Nice, I know Sibelius, although I have not used it. Yep, it is integrated with software-- in fact, that keyboard is not capable of making any sound on its own. It's purely a controller. It is made to be integrated with a specific software synth package called Native Instruments Komplete 11, which is super cool and capable of emulating pretty much every sort of instrument you can imagine, as well as synthesizing an incredible array of sounds in many different ways. I am currently using Ableton Live 9 as the primary software for producing... in the past I used Nuendo as well... It's very cool stuff. If you think this setup is amazing, you should see the other one when it's not amidst a bunch of boxes and covered in sheets

Is your controller an 8-track mixer? Is that what the 8 little knobs are on the top? I'm VERY out of touch with all this stuff, but now you've sparked my interest again!

No, in this simple setup there's no need for a physical mixer, because I'm not working with different pieces of hardware or multiple sources of audio that might be playing all at once... The different channels of audio all exist within the software project and are mixed in realtime, but the channels have independent sources or sythesizers of audio, volume levels and effects chains, just like the way it would work if it were all hardware. It's amazing what can be done with software. The eight knobs are controllers that can be assigned to any parameter, actually. Generally speaking they are attributes of the sound you are currently working with. This allows you to modify and tweak the characteristics of your sound in real time... and the motions of the knobs, along with the keys that are pressed, can be recorded. It's super cool stuff If you want to know more, here are links: www.ableton.com/en/live/ is the main piece of software. www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/keyboards/komplete-kontrol-s-series/ is the keyboard. www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-11/ is the software synth library that it integrates with.
