I have been aware since late last week that Shah's poos still weren't quite normal. He also gets very stressed out when I take him out of the cage in my television room. Something is freaking him out and I cant figure what it is. So I now take him out of his cage when I let the cockatiels out in their room and he is fine. I thought I might take him to the vet today. He wont be coming home to late Saturday morning. He has a lot of organic matter in his bowel which is not moving and his gizzard is not digesting food. This is all due to the time he escaped and got that piece of bark stuck in his gizzard - then it moved and blocked his intestine. The vet also thinks he is suffering from post traumatic stress from his escape (remember he had 2 dogs barking at him all night and they were literally inches away from him). He says he will always suffer from this as he has found this problem with birds that escape and go back home. I miss him so much but he is in the best place as the vet says he will make a full recovery. We move in just over 2 weeks' time and am now freaking out as to how he will handle the change.

Poor little guy. I didn't know how he spent his night out. That must have been terribly frightening for him. Maybe the move will do him some good, though it will probably be stressful at first.
After your move, will you be close enough to continue with this vet? We are contemplating a move closer to Houston, TX. I couldn't take Allie to that great animal hospital without a referral, but there are other avian certified vets there. Not to mention better medical care for us.

Unfortunately, instead of the vet being 15 minutes away, he will be 3 hours away once I move. It is going to be a problem. I miss the little guy - it is just so quiet without him but started scrubbing his cage out this morning. I asked that he be put in a cage near some cockatiels as he loves them (they are all Pippins to him) and when I rang to check up on him yesterday afternoon, they said he had been chatting to the cockatiels. Another quaker has come into hospital and apparently Shah is chatting to the quaker as well. I am not sure if he is chatting or screaming at them

Sorry to hear that Shah had to go back to the vet-- and that he has to stay a while too. Hope he will recover fully and will be back with you soon. I'm sure that your home seems empty without him, and he undoubtedly misses you too. It's nice he has the 'Tiels and another QP at the vet's to talk with and squawk at.

I hope Shah starts to feel better soon, sounds like he is in good hands there. Hopefully he can recommend a vet close to your new home.

Hi Caseysmom, unfortunately there is no-one better but at least I can get blood tests done and sent to him. He has also told me how I can send "samples" to him but if he needs an xray, we will have to do the drive. Can you imagine - 6 hours trapped in the car with a complaining quaker?

Oh, no, poor Shah! ...just when it seemed he'd recovered.
It's good that you have this vet who knows his stuff. I hope Shah (and you) recover OK and that Saturday goes well for you.

awwww... poor little guy. I have a hard time believing the vet when he says that Shah will not recover from his over night escape. I believe it is traumatic but I also believe that will lots of love and attention that he will forget in time... or at least adjust better.
I feel for you having to take that long drive as I had to do it with Oscar. It wasn't that bad though... yes I had to pay a lot of attention to him... but overall they do travel well. He actually never screamed too much at all.... since he was right beside me or on my finger.
Best wishes and I hope you both recover soon.

Poor Shah, I hope he is ok! The big wide world is a scary place even for wild birds, so human companions must find it terrifying! I will keep my fingers crossed for you both and am sure your little boy will be back to you in no time. Much love xx

Thanks for your good wishes everyone. Julianna, I am a firm believer in never say never. Now I know what I am dealing with, I can employ alternative therapies to help him settle down. His life will be so different shortly and, once he gets into routine, I believe he will be very happy. I rang the vet this morning - they said he is eating and chatting to the other birds. They said he is very well behaved (must have the wrong bird)

I am of the never say never crowd. Love and trust can go a long way in healing the mind and good medical care can heal the body. You have history with Shah and I believe one night out will be trumped by that. Sorry he's going through this, and my thoughts and prayers are with both of you.

I'd be willing to bet that most, if not all, of the others your vet has experience with don't have your patience, love and devotion to shower on their parrots. I believe he will get better.

Aw, sorry I am a bit late to this thread, Jan... I bet you miss your little guy so much! I'm sure he will recover from what ails him and I'm glad he's getting the care he needs to get back into tip top shape. And I agree with the others that he will bounce back from the stress of his escape... love can definitely heal those wounds and you've got plenty of that for him

Shah is home - but only for an overnight visit. The mass has moved slowly but he needs to continue on the treatment until it is further down the intestine and can break up on its own. He whinged and screamed and carried on all the way home (fortunately only 15 minute drive), whinged and moaned when I put him in his lovely clean cage and then screamed - I realised he was yelling for a bath so put the heater on as it winter here and gave him a lovely warm bath. He rushed down to it and had a splash around and has been quiet ever since. It is lovely having him home (although I have enjoyed the extra time to myself and the quiet) and just know that I will be quite upset tomorrow when he has to be returned. I am also watching Pippin closely as I think he may be on the road to being unwell. I am 2 weeks away from moving and can really do without it but at least they should be fixed up before I go.

I have to take Shah back to the vet in half an hour. He has been very distressed and took ages to settle last night. He is very unsettled today and I can hear him screaming out for me. I am worried about taking him back - I think he will stop eating. It is extremely upsetting.
