Hello everyone, I'm having a complete freak out. Maya is drinking a little more water than usual lately. It's not excessive, but it is noticeable. Yesterday, she started turning in these weird little circles on the sofa, and backing up as if she could see something out of the corner of her eye, or something was on her that she couldn't get off. I thought immediately it might be a parasite, so gave her a beaphar spot-on pipette and the behaviour seems to have stopped. I'm still a little concerned about her drinking though; she's eating her vegetables, mostly she has broccoli, carrot, boiled peas and green beans with an oyster shell sprinkle for calcium. She is also eating her KAYTEE rainbow pellets and also her lafebers nutriberries. She is very fond of her sprouted seeds. Her poops are a healthy brown colour with white streaks in and well structured. There are no changes in personality, she's sleeping normally and is still just as chatty and playful as before. I have emailed my vet for advice already and read about 6 different online advice pages, none of which have actually answered my question. I'm still waiting for my vet to reply. He's very good and has really looked after Maya, so I'm sure he will email me when he can. I just wanted to know from you guys if you thought it was serious and I should just call up straight away for an appointment today?

I tend to over-react to things and rush my animals to the vet if I suspect something is wrong. I have discussed this with the vet and he said he would rather me do that than to sit and wait to see what else develops. It may be something, it may be nothing. If it was me, I would have her checked out but as she is your baby, it is entirely your decision. Good luck and please let us know what the vet says. Maya is a very special little girl.

Thanks Jan, I'll keep an eye on her and wait for the vet. Our vet is a fair train ride away, and I'm worried about causing Maya unnecessary stress. She's sat with me now, enthusiastically attacking a hanging toy and copying my laugh, which is very sweet. I think if I haven't heard back from the vet in a couple of hours, I'll call anyway and see what they say. Thanks again for your advice.

The other thing I thought of is that, like us, our animals often have "off" days - where they are not feeling particularly well but they seem to bounce back the next day. Hope Maya is okay.

Hi Jan, thanks. There's been no more abnormal drinking today. She's stuffing her face (as usual) with veggies and lafeber berries and birdie egg biscuits. Her feathers are a bit untidy and look wet from the beaphars spot on, I've been trying to help her clean them today and they're starting to look a little better. There have been no repeats of the crazy 'what have I got on my tail' turning around. She's bouncy and happy, and seems to be perfectly healthy. I'll keep a firm eye on her though, as I know they can hide things very well. Luckily, I have a fair amount of time off this week, so if the vet recommends a visit, I can take her straight in.

Sounds like she is well and truly over whatever it was. I am certain that our animals enjoy watching us have a melt down when we think they are sick.

Glad to hear that Maya seems to be doing better! I tend to overreact as well, so I can understand the stress of such a situation!

Hello guys, I think she's absolutely fine. Her feathers are back to normal, she's drinking her normal amount, stuffing her face with both her food and whatever of mind she can get her dinosaur toes on, currently she is sat on top of her cage having a very animated chat with herself. This morning, we got the closest to the word 'hello' she's ever got before. She's her normal cheeky, playful, absolutely bonkers, attention-demanding self and her poops are perfectly normal. Perhaps it was just that she eaten more dry food than she normally does, or that it has been a little hotter over the last few days (which it has). Needless to say, I will keep a further eye on her, because I know how good they are at hiding illness, but she appears, in every way, to be absolutely fine

I heard back from the vet who said he expected it was nothing but that if I was worried, that would obviously be happy to see her. I'm going to keep an eye on her over the next day or so and, if I'm still worried, I'll take her in to check. She seems to be completely back to normal though, but I'm just concerned that I might have missed something really fundamental, so I'll see how we go. Aaron, I agree, those dinosaur toes are the best!

Hahaha, Jan, you are so sweet. Just thought I'd update everyone, I took Maya to the vet today anyway because I was terrified I had missed something. She was very good, but sulked a little when she got home. The vet took some blood work and there appeared to be nothing wrong with her kidneys or any other part of her. He also took some fecal samples which came back normal, so she has a clean bill of health. He said just to monitor the drinking, but that he was satisfied with her health. He said she weighed 86g on his scales, which is 2 or 3 grams lower than I'm used to, but by the time she'd got home and stuffed her face with vegetables and nutriberries, she weighed 93g on my scales, which is the top end of normal for her, so I'm not worried. Whilst waiting for her bloodwork, I met the owners of a poor African Grey who had contracted aspergillosis four months ago, and who was being monitored, and the owner of a leopard gecko, who was adorable. Whilst in the waiting room for the train, Maya was hungry, so I sat her on my shoulder in the closed space (All the windows and door closed firmly!) to feed her. I was very saddened to hear a family talking at the other end about their parrot, whose name was Rio, and saying "our parrot doesn't talk. He's boring." and then looking at Maya and saying "I wish Rio would be like that." I always try very hard not to get on my high horse when I hear things like this, because Maya is only at the beginnings of puberty and so still has much of that baby compliance, but she doesn't talk yet, and may never do, and I find her anything but boring. And I feel she is as tame as she is because I've worked hard to win her trust, to train her and socialise her and make sure she knows that, as long as she is with me, it doesn't matter where she is because she is safe. It always breaks my heart a little bit to hear people speak about these gorgeous birdies with that kind of dismissiveness. I bet Rio isn't boring, I bet maybe he just wants a bit of love and appreciation Anyway, the good news is that Maya is completely healthy, was a very good girl travelling to and from the vet, ate like a trooper when we got home and was VERY ready for bed at 9pm this evening, bless her! I put her down a little bit early because she'd clearly had a very tiring day.

Glad that Maya got a good report! It sounds like poor Rio is a misunderstood and underappreciated parrot. There are people who probably shouldn't have a parrot at all, and I suspect Rio got stuck with such people.

Glad Maya is fighting fit - if not a little hungry As to Rio, I would have taken that bird off them - but that's me. Who cares if they talk or not - honest to goodness, what difference does it make? They still have great personalities whether they speak or not. Fancy being stuck with those people - poor Rio.
