She sounds like a great addition to your household. As long as Ralph doesn't mind, of course.

From the beginning, Ralph has accepted having another parrot around. No objections at all. He was watching Scooter this morning when she was using her bell to get scritches. Ralph looked at me like he was thinking "What's that silly bird doing over there?" Then he asked for scritches from me, looked over at Scooter and said graacckk! "See-- this is how you're supposed to do it!" is how I interpreted that graacckk!

I would have interpreted it the same way in your shoes. Clearly he considers himself the Senior Gentleman Parrot and has taken over her orientation.

I've begun to doubt that Greys have such rigorous standards for training their slaves as Quakers do. As smart and clever as QPs usually are, I can't imagine a QP arranging self-service scritches when there's a human slave around to give them. I'm sure Ralph will fill Scooter in on the proper way to train a slave.

From my limited experience, I think that's a good observation on one difference between greys and quakers. Allie is a problem-solver, too. Peppy was much more inclined to complain until he got my attention. Effective strategies, both of them.

'Toos get their slaves' attention by screaming like demons until said slaves will do WHATEVER THEY HAVE TO to stop it. When your eardrums are physically moving in and out in time with the screaming and your ears are bleeding, you obey.

With all their positive attributes, I suppose they should be forgiven for being a little loud sometimes-- though that may not always be easy to do, with one's eardrums (and nerves) shattered.

Situation sounds very challenging. I don't think I could handle it... I would probably be literally going crazy.

It's been a rough patch and we're still going through it, though he also has periods where he's not being a giant thorn in my side, too. I hope that means he's coming out of this latest phase.

We've sort of settled onto a plateau these past couple weeks. Not much progress, but no real setbacks either-- except for one. My new downstairs neighbors have a tendency to slam doors, which startles Scooter. Twice she got scared enough that she fell off her perch. I've had to complain to the manager of our apartment complex, and she told them to close doors quietly. The woman who lives in the apartment below them complained too; apparently, the door slams knocked a picture off her wall. Aside from a few lapses on their part, the door slamming hasn't been a big problem. Scooter is a little more adventurous about trying new foods, but not at going anywhere beyond her cage. She still chews off feathers, but not as often as before. She's become more talkative too.

My husband likes to target shoot on our property, and when Allie joined us, it disturbed her. If I was close by, she would give me a good nip. It doesn't bother her at all anymore. Peppy quickly learned to ignore it, also. My chickens were totally unfazed by it from the start. I think Scooter would be less and less bothered, but hopefully your inconsiderate neighbors will knock it off.

Scooter has learned to accept the presence of things that scared her at first, from the bottle of Poop-Off to the roll of paper towels and the cover on Ralph's cage. She's also figured out that I'm clumsy and drop things now and then and she seldom gets startled when I do. But I do wish they'd learn to close doors quietly down there. I go out of my way to be extra quiet and to keep the parrots from making too much of a racket, and we get stuck with inconsiderate neighbors again.

Rocky 'Too is just now beginning to really relax with us and not freak out over the million and one perfectly normal things that go on every day. Our overweight and elderly Lab lies down with a huge THUMP because she's arthritic and can't control her movements well. It's only been in the last month or so that Rocky has stopped jumping out of his skin every time she does it, even when he's LOOKING at her and KNOWS it's her making the sound. I drop things, too, and he still gets startled, but not as much. I always say, "I'm sorry" and "Oops" so he knows I'm not slamming things around angrily, I'm just a klutz. He's been with us for well over a year. It just takes a while. Sounds like Scooter's making much progress!
