Clyde is VERY possessive of his happy hut. It's just about the only thing he's like that about, with me anyway. He's possessive of other things in regard to the other birds, but not with me. As a result, his had gotten quite, um, gross. He wouldn't let me do anything about it without a full-on attack. However, yesterday I was cleaning up after baths and wiping down cages and realized his cage AND his hut had really gone beyond the pale. Ugh. So, figuring I was about to become a blood donor, I started to take it out with the idea I was going to give that cage a real cleaning. He came over to stick his beak in and "help," but otherwise was fine with it. He got bored with cleaning fairly quickly and went back to the boing with Benjy, and I washed that hut and tossed it in the dryer. It took FOREVER to dry, so be warned if you have similar designs on your bird's happy hut. They retain water big time. Start early in the day so it'll be dry by bedtime. I took a scrub brush to his cage and now it's all spanky clean. Perhaps having Rocky 'Too and the prospect of a maiming bite in the house makes a Clyde bite seem less intimidating. Maybe he senses that and it makes biting me less fun.

Why do you think he basically let you clean it this time and has launched a full-on attack in the past? Glad you didn't become a blood donor!

Lol Siobhan and good for you. I know how frustrating it can be to try and do some good... and get attacked for it. Oscar was the same way once but he has gotten used to the idea that I can still get whatever I want.... cause he can't fly. It is really important to have a nice clean cage... same as it is important for you to have a nice clean bed.
Congrats on keeping your blood to yourself lol

I also washed Shah's hut on the weekend. However, he has 2 - one grey and one green - so I can swap them over without any fuss from him. But all hell breaks loose if I try and put the yellow hut in his cage. He goes ballistic until it is removed.

I thought we had a spare, but I can't find it. He refused to even let me touch the thing last time I tried to take it out of his cage, so I have no idea why he didn't mind this time. I even rolled his cage over to the sink to make it easier to clean and he just sat on the boing. But then, yesterday was Abnormally Cooperative Bird Day. Rocky was sweet and affectionate. Clyde let me wash his happy hut. Freddie and Johnny put themselves to bed. Ringo sat on my arm and chattered and sang. I should have tried doing a big clean of Jade's cage, too, because even Jade was mellow yesterday -- though not quite THAT mellow, I'm sure. LOL I made do with just wiping hers down as best I could. It needs a serious cleaning, but she's SO cage aggressive.

I would like to start a petition to make every day Abnormally Cooperative Bird Day. That's a good day.

Bonnie has two happy huts (on her gotcha day she came with two cages, each with its own accessories), but she has chewed both of them quite badly, so I've ordered 2 fluffy blue ones from an Ebay store. Because she has a sleeping cage, the hut in it is really messy due to her being moved out of that cage as soon as she wakes in the morning (she doesn't get a chance to push out the mess with her beak as she used to do when in the same cage all the time). The main day cage doesn't have a hut in it anymore and we've found Bonnie to be far less aggressive without it.

Jade will let her happy hut alone for months on end and then suddenly decide to remodel it and chew it to bits so I have to buy her a new one. Clyde's had the same one for years. I used to put a washcloth in it for poopies, but he kept throwing it on the floor and he doesn't poop inside anymore, anyway. It had poop on top and down the sides, though. The top of his cage is a favorite place to hang out for the tiels, Jade and Maggie. Clyde and Benjy hang out on the boings.

I am very proud of my Shah - he never poops in his happy hut. He doesn't chew it either. But sometimes he bashes it up and sometimes it becomes his best friend (if you know what I mean).

I do know. When I cleaned Clyde's cage, I moved the two toys that Freddie and Johnny have relationships with. They were not pleased. Johnny ordered me to put them back and I did. He actually stood on top of Clyde's cage and stared at the toys and then at me and then at the spot where they should have been until I put them back the way they were. I apologized and said I only moved them so I could clean around them, but forgetting to put them back was a grave error, apparently.
