Did I get a special one last night! I was putting birds to bed and Peppy let me know he was not quite ready, so I took him on a walk/talk through the house. He pressed the whole length of his body up against me and stayed really still the whole time. It was like he did when he was in the hospital and didn't want me to leave, only this time he was clearly feeling better. I swear, just when you think you can't possibly love them any more than you already do, they go and do something like this.

Absolutely easttex. Every time Oscar comes back from the sitters ... I take him for a walk through the house... to re-familiarize him... and he does the same thing. It is truly awesome. These little guys really have more than instinct ... they have feelings... I swear.
Good to hear that he was up for the walk. Love it.

Yes, Kosmo cuddles at every opportunity. I hope it is in part because he loves me, but his lack of feathers probably makes him more susceptible to the cold as well.

Oh I love those cuddles. It is just uncanny how lovable these birds can be. I agree Julianna, they definitely have feelings. They are clearly more simplistic than ours, but there is certainly more than instinct there. Bcmama, I'm sure it is in large part because he loves you

When I'm tired and stressed and grouchy, Clyde runs up my arm and gives me a big kiss. He knows exactly what he's doing and why and it never fails to make the bad mood evaporate. Birds, especially, depend on being able to read the moods of and depend on the protection and care of their flock.

Now that is very true Siobhan... knowing the moods and depend on the protection and care of their flock. Course I am only one... but big enough I could be a flock... lol

I became aware of animals being able to "read" humans with Izzie so I figured if she was doing it, so were all my other animals. Yes, they do have feelings - but you have to understand that humans make everything complicated - animals are straightforward. The other day I saw a Noisy Miner on the road - it was standing over the body of its mate who had been hit by a car. It was very distressed. That's proof enough for me.

I've seen several posts lately on various bird pages on Facebook along the lines of "does your bird REALLY love you?" and "how to read your bird's body language" and so on. Frankly, even though I read them, I always think, anybody who lives with birds and who cares about them -- which obviously, all of us do -- will learn these things without having to read about them on Facebook. Of course our birds love us.

I just KNOW they feel affection and express how they feel. The other day I was holding Bonnie for about 20mins on her back and rubbing her face and head. She kind of went into a trance and was making a purring sound and closing her eyes (cute! although her drooping head made her look like she'd fainted) while I sweet-whispered to her...then she reverted back to 'Jekyll & Hyde' behaviour and gave me some token nips - just to remind me who is boss.

I can actually picture that biteybird... how sweet. They say if your bird will lay on it's back while in your hands then they have given to the ultimate trust.
