Hi I'm Jennie, proud mother of Freya (age 11) who is the brand new owner of Astro a 3 month old Blue quaker. We had been considering a pet for Freya for the last 2 years after we had to leave our 2 tortoises in the UK when we moved to Houston, Texas but I couldn't have predicted how we ended up with Astro.
A beautiful green QP called 'Gee' fly in to my window today, a little surprised I went outside to see what had happened to be faced with a very friendly tame green parrot.... He followed me in to the house and made himself quite at home. Through social media I tracked down his very happy owners but my daughter had fallen very much in love by this point and Gee's owner could see this. Overwhelmed by the safe return of Gee his lovely owners, after checking with me obviously, have gifted Freya a beautiful Baby blue quaker, now known as Astro, who arrives tomorrow!!
Whilst to some this might seem irresponsible, on both parts, believe me its not. We had researched adopting a bird in depth and had made the decision to go ahead, just we weren't expecting it to happen so soon! So I'm busy trying to learn as much as I can about our new addition to the family and I've already learnt loads from reading threads on the forum.
Looking forward to introducing you all to Astro and learning as much as I can.

G'day Jennie, Freya and Astro! Welcome. It sounds like this was meant to be. Keep reading up and please ask any questions you like. Someone will always answer and try to help. We hope you enjoy the forum and please keep us posted on how your new arrival settles in...I've kept my reply short, as Bonnie is sitting on me trying to nip my fingers as I type (LOL).

Hi Jennie and welcome to the forum! It's hard to see that anyone has been irresponsible. Very young children and parrots can be a poor mix in my opinion, but some kids Freya's age are mature enough to understand the needs of a Quaker, assuming an involved parent. Going from tortoises to parrot is quite the leap, but I'm sure by now you have an inkling of what you're getting into. We'll look forward to pictures of Astro. There's not much cuter than a baby bird. I live outside of Marshall, by the way. You have an incredible resource in Houston, called the Gulf Coast Veterinary Services. You can't get primary care there, but if you ever have serious health issues with Astro, your vet can refer you.

I will also say hello and welcome to the forum. These little creatures can be very demanding of your time and will soon rule the roost... lol.
They are wonderful to have... can be very messy at times... and can adapt to many situations given time. Always be sure to have plenty of patience with him and if you push too fast... you will be told by a nice little bite. There are many things that can easily frighten these birds so pay close attention to his voice so you can discover his/her stress call, warning call or just happy tunes.
It won't take long before they start talking. Just repeat certain words that you would like them to repeat... and voila!
Good luck.

Hi Jennie! I'm back in the UK and am the proud owner of my very first Quaker too He is an absolute joy - such a character! Everybody on here is so helpful and welcoming - I think us 'hatchlings' and our feathered friends are in very safe hands should we need any help or guidance x
