I agree, respect is definitely the name of the game. This is a good article... I do think there is value in the sitting calmly near the cage technique-- obviously not if it is causing intense distress in the bird, but if the bird is not being traumatized by it, it's certainly worthwhile. But I guess that's kinda the point of what they are saying

Sitting "by the cage" can mean a number of things which is what I think this article was trying to say. The reading part, and talking to your bird is great, as long as your presence isn't stressing him out. Read to him from across the room if necessary
