Been wondering something about safflower seeds for a while, and it's time I learned why they are a good substitute for sunflower seeds. The fat content is certainly lower than in black oil sunflower, but is higher than the grey striped. Those of you who recommend them, is it because the overall nutrition is better?

Honestly, I can't find a source that I feel is reputable that actually details the benefits of safflower seeds over sunflower. At this point, I don't feed Cupcake any seeds, but I had switched over to safflower largely because I didn't like Cupcake's behavior while eating sunflower seeds, and the general consensus seems to be that safflower is better. That said, it could be all a bunch of hearsay. I can't find anything that concretely illustrates safflower as better for the parrot. I'm glad you asked this because now I'm not sure I will keep making that recommendation.

The main benefit of safflower over sunflower seed seems to be the lower fat content. In comparing various tables of their respective nutritional values, I find that striped sunflower seeds have some advantages over safflower seed, and vice-versa; neither is entirely superior to the other. Ralph doesn't really care for sunflower seeds, but he does like safflower seeds and gets a little of the Higgins Safflower Gold mix every day-- with the approval of two avian vets.

Funny because Oscar will not eat the sunflower or safflower seeds. They all sure have different taste buds.. just like humans I guess.
