My QP is just four months old and having read lots of stuff relating to diet I decided to try him on pellet food. Up until now he's been fed on seed mixture with lots of sunflower seeds and dried banana and peppers etc. plus fresh fruit and veg and other titbits. I found there was an awful lot of waste though as he is very picky. He tends to go more for the larger seeds ie sunflower, but I have learned that too many of them are not good for the bird. However I tried him on pellets but he don't appear to like them. Should I persevere with it or go back to seed.

You should try the pellets soaked in no-sugar fruit juice such as apple or peach. I find they enjoy this a lot more than just hard pellets. They also love a lot of human food as long as it is given in small amounts. Oscar loves pasta or breads with lots of seeds in it. He certainly prefers all fruit fresh and peeled. Maybe this will help with your little one.

Soaking the pellets to soften them is often helpful in getting a parrot unused to eating them to try pellets. My QP Ralph eats his dry pellets, but still expects a daily ration of soaked pellets, and thinks they're a special treat. You might have to experiment with some different brands and types of pellets too, before you discover which ones your parrot might like.

If you want to feed a seed mix occasionally, I would switch to Higgins Safflower Gold. That said, you definitely want to be persistent about switching to pellets. One thing that we did when switching Cupcake to pellets was use the Harrisons high-potency mash, which is essentially a powder made from pellets-- we would submerge her seed mix in a bunch of this stuff, so she would have to go digging through it to get the seeds and would ultimately get used to the taste this way. It was not difficult to switch her over this way, although they are all different
