Last evening after the birds were all in bed, Skye started calling out. He often talks, coughs, laughs after he's covered, but his was different. He'd been "in bed" for about an hour or so when this started.
I went to his cage and uncovered him, asked him if he was ok. He stared at me. I lifted him out and took him over to my bed. I cuddled him, talked soothingly. He relaxed, and after about 30 minutes put him back. He was fine from then on.
He's moulting, and I suspect that this is helping to make him anxious and distressed.

Poor guy. I have a bird room that provides very quiet nights for them, but I sometimes worry that if someone had night frights I wouldn't hear it. One more thing I can worry about. Not that it sounds like Skye had them. It's good that you were close enough to pick up on his distress.

Aww, I'm sure he was glad to see you. We have a room for Cupcake to sleep in as well... I think I would hear if she started calling, but I still worry that I might not. So far there has not been any cases where I have heard her after she goes to bed. We close the door when we put her to bed initially, but once all of the lights are out in the house, I open the door a few inches. I've noticed that if I close it again in the morning before I wake her up, she gets agitated. She would rather hear us and see the light that comes in through the door in the morning, it seems.

The birds are in my room. As I have cockatiels and they do suffer from night frights, I also have a night light for them which has just enough light to guide them back to their branches. However, I usually hear them and put on the bedside lamp. One of the cockatiels (who has now passed away) had night frights constantly when she was moulting.

Oscar is moulting as well. I feel sorry for the little guys when they go through this as those new pin feathers can be quite painful. I find giving him extra baths (which he is willing to do) sure does help.
Once in a while Oscar will give a call out during the evening but not very often. I have learned to leave him be because when I have gotten up and gone to see him... he just wants to be left alone. Maybe he knows it is just a dream? Hmmmm... do they dream?

I'm sure they dream. It may be very different from our dream content, but there's been studies done demonstrating that animals have complex dreams. Granted, this example is about rats, but I think it's probably safe to assume that any creature with a brain that sleeps has some sort of mental processing that occurs during rest, and the complexity of the dream is probably proportional to the complexity of the creature's intelligence and ability to understand its own experiences... web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2001/dreaming.htmlI wonder what they dream about... I bet it's very cute.

Isaac, our Timneh Grey sometimes has bad dreams. He'll cry out and we go comfort him then he's fine.
Birdie dreams...flying, eating...

The way Bonnnie is behaving right now, it's likely she's having dreams about pecking our eyes out.

Our bedroom and the birds' room are on opposite ends of the house and I have "mom hearing" (that's the way my mother always described it) so if somebody has night frights, I will wake up from a sound sleep and hear them at the other end of the house. Don't worry that you won't know if your birds need you in the night. Freddie and Johnny (the tiels) sometimes have night frights and once Jade freaked out over something that may have been a mouse and I always hear.
