OKay... I am ready to take a beating on this but one of Oscar's treats has lately been one of those tiny white marshmellows. I know we should limit their in- take of sugar and salts and I really do... but he loves these and I give him one every few days. He just looks so sweet holding this little marshmellow and of course he never drops a bite.
From my garden the veggies are now ready and he gets as many fresh carrots and peas and broccoli as he likes.... and this is usually a daily occurrence.
I guess it is the Ukranian in me that says ... eat... eat... good food... lol.
Do you all break the rules just a little when it comes to food?

Shah has been banned from eating nuts as he is allergic to them - I still give him a nut twice a week and he goes crackers over it. If they are getting a healthy diet the rest of the time, an occasional "treat" wont hurt.

We do give Bonnie some safflower seeds (only every 2-3 days, about 4-5 each time) as a treat for good behaviour (i.e., not biting, or being nice and quietish). I know this is a bit naughty...

Every now and then I'll give mine a bit of a Spanish cookie - the name escapes me right now. They are very plain, similar to a graham cracker. I believe the ingredients are a better quality than most of what is sold here, and you recognize all of them - flour, butter, etc. My grey will eye a glass of red wine and do a version of smacking her lips, and it makes me feel guilty, but she doesn't get any.

Two avian-certified vets I've taken Ralph to visit have given their seal of approval to feeding parrots a little safflower seed. Ralph gets a small amount every day. They're less fatty than sunflower seeds, but should still be fed in moderation. Some parrots are probably better off without it.
George the YCA ate plenty of things that aren't good for parrots in the 40 years he was with me, and never had a problem because of them. An occasional taste of something like the potato chips and cheese puffs George liked probably won't do any harm, as long as it's not done too often or in anything but very small quantities. Through most of George's life with me, there wasn't much reliable information available on what not to feed parrots. Things have certainly changed, but there's still lots of misinformation circulating (for example, the idea that parsley is bad for all birds; it's only bad for certain types of fowl and is actually beneficial to parrots)-- and plenty of conflicting information too (I've read that garlic is bad for birds, and also that it's good for them).

Bonnie used to dip her beak into my wine glass when she was younger, but now she prefers milky cappuccino-type drinks (but I can't have them, so she only gets that when my mum or mother-in-law visit).

What? easttex... you drink? Send some of that over here will ya? It all started with my grandfather. From age four, I always got the first sip from his can of Falstaff. I've loved beer ever since. Wine came a little later. You know, I don't think I've ever heard of Canadian wine. Maybe it's so good that it is hoarded and not for export?

I was just thinking that Easttex and her grey can go visit Siobhan when she gets the birdie bar installed Allie already thinks there is one bird too many with just the two of them. Or the three of us, I should say. Can you imagine her thoughts at Siobhan's?

My parents' cockatiel occasionally gets into their wine glasses. One time I saw him take at least 5 sips within an hour. Honestly, it was the calmest I've ever seen that bird. He's almost 25, and still appears to be totally healthy. We don't eat a whole lot of sweet things (especially ones that do not have chocolate in them), but in the event that we do, I will occasionally give Cupcake a crumb or two, which she loves.

I'm digressing (again) here - my mother-in-law told me some stories about my husband when he was little. One of them was that he used to sneak sips from the wine they kept in the wardrobe, when he was about 2 years old, but it took them a while to realise.

My hubby used to drink anything that was left in the party peoples glasses when he was young. They never found out. In my home there was never enough money for booze.... so I missed those experiences.
I remember I was of legal age... if you can believe it... before I actually started drinking. They should make the legal age 50 ... lol... just kidding.
