It's been quite a few years now, but I bought some stainless steel pans from QVC that were nice but pretty inexpensive. Command Performance is the brand, I think. They clean up so easily that I don't miss the Teflon. I didn't like the knowledge that I was probably ingesting some of that stuff, too. I have a couple of the ceramic frypans, and they're pretty good, but they will not last like the cast iron.

I have cast iron skillets but I can never find cast iron pots and it's quite irritating because I love using cast Iron for cooking. Could you recommend any ceramic Pots or pans? Or baking utensils ? I also have a crockpot that I'll be doing away with it as well because I heard that it's hazardous. My bird Pete is not located directly in the kitchen he's in a separate room but they're adjacent to one another I've had the stove fan on just in case in the kitchen window open. I know for sure one of my skillets is Teflon I do not use that anymore but I'm not sure about most of my pots because they are my wife's grandma's old cookware as far as I can tell there's no Teflon on them but they also don't have any name brands on them as well and I have to use one today so how do I go about that?

My ceramic fry pans are Ozeri, which I got from Amazon. I think they make some pots. I prefer cast iron, too. If I could, I would appoint my kitchen with Le Cresuet (not the stoneware version), but it is very expensive. My bakeware is any old stuff, except for a couple pieces of the Le Creuset.
You should be able to tell if something is Teflon coated. It's pretty distinctive. If it's really old, it probably shows wear and tear on the Teflon part. If you have to use something you're not sure of, I would do what I recommended before, if you can. Put Pete somewhere behind a closed door, don't heat the pot on high and don't let it go dry.

Misuse of polymer-coated and impregnated cookware such as Teflon can kill all birds in the home virtually immediately. Fumes from these products such as stove parts, drip pans, coffeemakers, irons and ironing board covers can also kill a quaker parrot if the product is burned or overheated. If a coated skillet is overheated - over 500 F. or 260 C, the fumes will poison the bird in minutes.
It is very difficult to watch fumes.... so I am always extremely careful with any chemicals around Oscar. I have stopped burning scented candles the day he arrived. I am so very sorry Sharyn that that happened to you. I can only imagine the pain you felt.

Other types of cast iron cookware can be found at Amazon.com, but a lot of what's there is on the expensive side. Cast iron may be considered too old fashioned for the mainstream retailers to stock any variety of it, and that's really too bad.

The only problem I have with cast-iron cookware is the weight of it (I have a major wrist injury and have to lift a normal-sized cast-iron frypan with both hands, otherwise it's impossible). I've found Scanpan and Tefal brands to be very good and they don't seem to give off fumes like the cheaper stuff. The downside is the expense, but in general you get what you pay for - sometimes after saving up for a while! If you have a couple of working options for the short-term I'd try to buy the good stuff when you can afford it.

We've gotten rid of all of our teflon cookware gradually over the past couple of years. We used them carefully for a while, but eventually we just decided the risk was too great and began to get rid of them. I'm not real knowledgable about what we use alternatively. It's not cast iron, but just plain metal of some sort without any coating. The last teflon item we replaced was our griddle, for which we got a ceramic replacement, although we haven't tried it yet. We don't use any traditional cleaning products in the house because of fumes, unless Cupcake is carefully tucked away in another room. I'd like to get a maid service but not sure how that would work with Cupcake sitting in the middle of everything. Still trying to work that out. House is a disaster in the meantime
