When I first got Mr P, he had a bad case of cage aggression. Due to this, I rotate his toys every week. I made him a toy a few weeks ago. He loves it. It's a seagrass mat with a bell and various other shiney attractive plastic pieces tied to it. Because he loves it so much, I didnt have the heart to take it out of his cage for toy rotation. Today, he is obsessed with it and won't even step up out of his cage to come out. Now, to his credit, he is not lunging at me when I try to get him, but he IS letting me know that he does NOT want my hand in his cage. This is the first sign of cage aggression I've seen in months, and I am 100% sure it's due to this toy as he won't leave it, he keeps putting his foot on it, and he is even sleeping next to it. So, as soon as I get him out of his cage, I am going to have to take it away and put in something he doesnt like as much. Do you all see this kind of obsessive behavior over toy in your FIDS? It seems like no matter how long I have him, this type of behavior doesnt go away permamently, rather, it recurs if I don't change out his toys regularly. Is this normal quaker behavior or is Mr P just weird? BTW, I get my new foster at the end of next month (after my daugther's wedding). I am curious to see what kind of behavior she exhibits.. Poor thing is so neglected, she doesnt even have a name. The guy who owns her calls her "retard" because she plucks. So sad

It must be love! It does sound like it might be a case of raging hormones. That unnamed little girl needs some love! Very kind of you to provide a temporary loving home to her. Good luck with her.

So wonderful you're fostering. What a terrible way to treat a bird. I'm glad she's coming to stay with you!

So did it work? Is he less possessive of the new toy?

I wound up taking it out of his cage and putting it away totally. I will rotate it back in a few weeks and see what happens. Mr P is exhibiting new weird behavior these days that I am currently trying to work through. It seems now that he is biting me AFTER he steps up on my hand, not always though, which makes it even harder. Every time I think we have overcome the biting, it shows up again in other behavior. My poor hand is a big bruise these days

Happy is very protective of her toys. When it's time to change them out she gets very upset with me for touching her things. I had to throw one toy away completely, because she was mating with it nonstop and wouldn't leave it except to eat and drink. I don't know why or how that toy was different, but it's really easy to see when they get obsessive about one.
I'm really glad you're taking in the foster!

Thanks, I have to wonder if this is something particular about rescues, the obsessiveness about their toys (and only certain one) or it pertains to one owner handfed babies too? Perhaps it's due to having an unstable environment for so many years of their lives?
I'll be getting the foster the end of August. I just hope that she doesnt teach Mr P any bad habits!
EDITED to say: any MORE bad habits! LOL

I wish I knew more about Happy's early time/how old she is/etc.

Jade is that way about ALL her toys, even the ones she doesn't like. I just roll with it. If they get poopy and need wiped off, I put something especially yummy in the treat cup across the room, and wipe FAST while she's over there stuffing her face, but I never take them away.
