This was really something....Pauly got a new 11 month old girlfriend rehomed here 2 days ago. "Sweetie" doesn't have a fully developed tail and is much lighter than Pauly.
Anyway...about the jailbreak.....he protested as I went off to work. He has one of those pagoda style big cages and I've never had to tie the doors shut. But lately in order to settle him down during mating season, I've had to let him come out of the cage on his own and then collect him about 15 minutes later. To him it's a triumph! He remembers the past 2 years of being stuffed into the cage, whereas before, he flew free in a garage all the time. So he steps to one of the doors of the cage and just gloats for several minutes, bobbing his head incessantly and not wanting to budge or step up -- just giving me kisses and rooted to the spot. No - he must conquer like Napoleon, and nothing will do till he ascends to the heights and survey his "world" in my room.
Well...2 days into this I'm off to work for 8 hours and left with him screaming for me in his cage.
The radio is always on the floor but I came home to a totally different radio station playing and the room deathly quiet with no bird sounds. I went to turn on the light, didn't see him, and thought "oh good - he's finally gone into his new happy hut and gone to sleep." Boy was I wrong! I neared my bed and heard a shriek that I thought was behind the bed. No - I looked down, and there he was next to the radio, in the box I use to hold my toiletries. He found a large container of his old seed food, and pried the lid off it to eat a little. He then must have tried the radio knob with his beak. The radio lights up at night so he nestled down next to it. The amount of poop was negligible. Good - his touch of pancreatitis was abating, and he got exercise.
I thought I mentally ill mother (who used to have a bird, and tries to talk to Pauly) let him out, but I thought again.
I had just gotten him off of pellets because of a touch of pancreatitis, and that little nipper made the jailbreak while I was away because he saw his old home's seeds in a clear container! He also probably wanted to show off in front of the Conures, who are as quiet as ever.
He was remarkably relaxed for the rest of the evening but HAD to sit next to my desk to completely settle down.
*sigh* If only I could birdproof the room, and put a giant dropcloth over everything, I think Pauly would be an excellent house-sitter. Really!!
