Hi everyone, I don't know why I never thought to look for a Quaker Parrot board until now, but I'm happy to find your little community. We named Gaudi after the Spanish Catalan architect because we saw a great number of wild Quakers while visiting Barcelona. Gaudi was born in 2008. He is a completely healthy bird except for one disability. Gaudi went completely blind in the fall of 2012. It's hard to know if his eye site had always been poor, or if his vision deteriorated quickly. There was no illness or infection associated with the blindness. We took him to a bird specialist but they didn't find anything else wrong with him. Initially, it was very sad for us, but Gaudi quickly adapted and is a very happy and spoiled bird. He knows his way around his cage perfectly and manages very well. Here is a video of Gaudi when he was very young and before he was blind. This was one of his first baths: Gaudi takes a bathGaudi is a very healthy bird and loves vegetables, including green juice. Here's a little video of him drinking green juice. Gaudi drinks the green juiceMy own name is Mandi. My husband and I live in the Niagara Region of Canada and along with Gaudi, we also have a Lovebird named Lindy. Nice to meet you! Mandi (& Gaudi)

Greetings and Welcome Mandi & Gaudi! Nice to meet you too! It's always inspiring to hear about little QPs that overcome such huge obstacles in life. That's really great that you are able to give him such a happy life in spite of his blindness. The videos are great, thanks for sharing! You've certainly come to the right place if you like to talk Quaker Parrots. We certainly do

Hi Mandi, welcome to you and Gaudi. Animals handle their disabilities differently to humans and seem to cope quite well. I look forward to hearing your stories about Gaudi.

Hi and welcome! I'll be sending you some private messages (or maybe I'll post for everyone to see), picking your brain for ideas for caring for a blind parrot. Please check out the "General Pet Bird Discussion" section. My baby Pico has limited vision, and is going to his second appointment with his specialist on Wednesday. We're happy you found us!

Welcome to you and Gaudi! It's heartening that Gaudi gets along so well and has adapted to his blindness. Reading about him can offer encouragement to anyone whose parrot has a disability. And being a former student of architecture history, his namesake is familiar to me.

Welcome Mandi, et al! Both your birds are beautiful. I have a weakness for lovebirds, along with quakers, greys, every other parrot, chickens, all wild birds, etc. etc.

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! I can tell right away that this is a really nice, cozy community. Thanks for including me.
Animals really are amazing. Dani and Zach, I'm sorry to hear that Pico is also losing vision. I'll check out the other post. I think you'll find that as long as you don't change the cage around, it won't be a big transition. Gaudi adapted so well that it took us some time to realize that he couldn't see. He was actually completely blind by the time we discovered it. I only noticed because I offered him some peanut butter one day and he could smell it but kept missing the spoon. It was very scary for us because we thought that it might be something more serious. Luckily, the blindness wasn't associated with any other illness, like signs of infection around the eye. The doctor said it was probably hereditary and that was that!
Looking forward to chatting with all of you here and around the board.
Mandi & Gaudi
