Unfortunately Shah is very ill. His blood work came back and it is not so good. He is staying overnight at the vet and comes home for a day and then off again to the vet on Thursday and Friday. This could go on for a number of weeks. His stomach is badly inflamed, he is not absorbing nutrients from food and he is in discomfort. I feel really bad about this - there is no use telling me not to bash myself up - I really missed this one and Shah has been suffering because of it. I have spent a couple of hours cleaning his cage (I managed to get it outside but it was a struggle) so it is now sitting in the sun. Have moved out a lot of rubbish from it - he wont be pleased. The house is so quiet without him but I know he is in the best place at the moment. I have decided to take him away for a weekend once he is better. Wont go too far - probably stay where Izzie is agisted. I really am a bad parront - but this wont ever occur again. In future I am not going to worry about the money - if the bird is sick, then it goes to where the vet can instantly diagnose and has the equipment to confirm the diagnosis.

Thanks Biteybird. I failed to mention that he has some bacterial infections as well. It will be a long road back for him. I just cant understand how I can recognise when something is wrong with the dog, the pony and the 2 cockatiels and completely miss Shah. And I thought his moodiness was because he was just being difficult. It will be interesting to see how his personality changes once he is feeling better. I really am missing him. Cant stand the quietness How's Bonnie? What a lucky little quaker to be seeing Central Australia. I bet she is quite a novelty - as you mention, quakers aren't very common in Australia so she should be making quite an impact.

It's amazing how a little bird can manage to fill an entire house, isn't it?
Jan, if you're a bad parront, I expect there are a whole lot of people in that boat with you. Many of us have missed illness. I thought for a long time that Peppy's bacterial infection and parasites were just him settling into a new household. Until there is some physical clue, saliva in my case and Pippin in yours, it's very, very easy to overlook. It's understandable that you would bash yourself over this, but I doubt anyone else will.
I need to to get my birds outdoors more. Wouldn't be surprised if there were a D deficiency here.

Hi again, Jan. Of course it's hard to spot their illnesses and easy to put it down to them being difficult - but you must remember that's how quakers are, generally speaking! Again, I must point out that it's not your fault. I think you are a much better 'parront' than we are to Bonnie (she hasn't yet been to a vet). Bonnie is going fine. But today she was insufferable - squawked from 10am (we had to drive for 6+ hours) and ended up going to bed early, in disgrace. As I told her: "Now you have a choice; either be quiet or go in the car and get covered up!"...then 5-10 minutes later, "Well, you made your bed, now you can lie in it!". And so she did. When we get home I'm going to move her cage to the front loungeroom window, as I suspect she may need some sunshine at home (her current cage location doesn't really get any). Please keep us posted on Shah's progress and try not to worry too much (I know that's not easy).

Aw, Jan... This is definitely a tough situation. You certainly don't deserve to be called a bad parront. I too am very eager to learn what Shah's behavior will be like when he is feeling better. I bet he will be like a different parrot.

I love the word parront. Jan... please do not beat yourself up. These little ones are tons of work and it is hard to remember all the things they require. You have a huge heart... and that is all that counts.

Wishing all the best to you and Shah. It sounds like he'll be getting the best possible care from his new vet, and from you.

Shah is home until Thursday. He was so pleased to see me - he was trying to get out of the cage. I have popped him in his home cage and left him in peace so he can sleep and eat. Just went to check on him and he said "hello". Thanks everyone for your good wishes - it has helped me enormously.

We have had play time together tonight and he is really happy and not biting or beak bashing!!!! He was actually interested in what I was doing. He stayed up for quite a while and didn't demand to go to bed - just let me know with gentle squawks instead of the usual screaming. I never thought I would say this but I am so happy to hear "Monkey Breath" shouted at me. He wont be happy to go back on Thursday morning but hopefully things have improved and he can come home again on Thursday and not have to stay overnight. I just cant get over how quiet and empty the house seems without him. I got upset looking at his empty cage It is just so wonderful to have him home.

Best wishes to Shah (and you) for a speedy recovery. DO NOT beat yourself up over this (easier said than done, I know)! Parrots are MASTERS at hiding their illnesses, it's instinct and something they MUST do in the wild to remain with their flock. They've been doing it for billions of years. They are good at it!

Really glad to hear things are going so well with Shah, Jan... I bet he's going to do a complete turnaround as he starts to feel better.

I'm so sorry about Shah, and for missing this thread entirely, until now. The way you feel about not knowing that he was sick, that's how I felt when I had Cami's teeth floated and discovered how bad her mouth hurt. I know that you are beating yourself up, but you shouldn't. Birds are so good at hiding their illnesses, and Quakers are temperamental anyway! Sending love to you and Shah.

Shah has been absolutely impossible today. He is screaming constantly - he wants to be picked up. I have been doing this a few times as I think he needs to be reassured. I did get a bite and some beak bashing but, on the whole, he has been pretty good and wants cuddles and scritches. He has also been pretty good about the changes in his cage - I made a few changes while he was in the cage and he obliged me by trying them out. He wont be happy to go back to the vet tomorrow but I can tell that more treatment is required. I was supposed to go to a course today but cancelled it as I thought it best to stay home with The Screamer.

Poor Shah. I know he will appreciate your company and will understand that the vet visits were necessary (once he starts to feel better). Until then you might be in for some more sacrifices and a hard time...hang in there!
