Hubby was off this Fri/Sat & we didn't have anywhere we needed to be, so I decided a big cage scrubdown was just the thing. Yesterday he got the vinegar spray, scrub brush & rags, and tackled Otey's cage. This involved breaking down the components & carting everything outside in the sunshine.
Well, the boy was not amused, even though he'd been spending most of his play time hanging out on top of Aldo's cage. Since the toys had to come out anyway, I put his two favorite inside Aldo's cage. Otey's was still trying to bite everyone who walked by, so I toweled him & plopped his little feathered rear in Aldo's cage. Aldo let out a distressed cry, so I let him inside the cage, too. I waited to see what happened, fully expecting to break up a fight.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Otey fussed because I had toweled him, & Aldo went to his nap corner & just stayed there. After a few minutes, they both started playing with Otey's big mobile toy. Otey didn't seem to care that Aldo had his toy, & Aldo didn't care that Otey was in his cage.
We generally all take a nappy around 1 pm, so I decided to see how that would go. Again, Aldo went to his bed corner, & Otey perched on another branch with his favorite plastic linking chain draped over his shoulder. Dogs came in & settled, radio on, & everyone had a nice nap.
Since they were getting along so nicely, I decided to let them sleep overnight & not reconstruct Otey's cage until this morning. Amazingly, everything went just fine & they even shared an oatmeal breakfast together.
Otey's now back in his clean cage (Aldo's is much, much easier to deal with), but we'll see what happens when I have them out later this afternoon. It definitely wouldn't have worked in reverse. Otey is very cage possessive while Aldo isn't at all. Lovey will go in there when Aldo's inside, & he never tries to run her out. Even little Buddy the parakeet poked his head inside Aldo's cage.
I just thought it was funny how Aldo's first sleepover was such a big success. I really didn't expect it, but then that's quakers, isn't it? Never do what you think they will.
