They're cute and very feisty. I had one when I was 10. He had a mind of his own. LOL My dad finally decided to "show him who's boss" (the idea was that Dad, being bigger than I was, could convince him to be obedient, HA, but not by being mean; Dad was just going to ride him around the paddock and that was supposed to convince him that he had to let ME ride him). Dad found out who was boss and it most decidedly was not Dad. laugh.png Pepper tossed him off like a bad habit and Dad fell in a heap on the hard ground. Mind you, when Dad fell or hit his thumb with a hammer or anything, if he cussed, it meant it wasn't serious. Well, Dad didn't cuss right away. I thought, uh-oh, and turned to run for Mom, and THEN he cussed (the wind had been knocked out of him and he couldn't cuss right at first) and once he cussed, I howled with laughter and said, "Did you find out who's boss, Dad?" He got up and brushed himself off and said, "Yes, blankety-blankety-blank," which only made me laugh harder. laugh.png Meanwhile, Pepper was standing by his shed watching all this with great satisfaction.

I have always known that Shetlands have a reputation - not all that good. And I can see it in Izzy but if you meet her half way, there is no problem. One of the other Shetlands on the property is the most wonderful animal you could meet. Her name is Possum and she was surrendered at 3 weeks of age. The lady who runs the property kept her as her own - who could blame her? I see great potential with Izzy - she is one smart girl - she does have a few problems that will be sorted out of the coming weeks. Whatever happened to Pepper?

We didn't really have enough room for Pepper -- we only have a half acre here -- so when it became obvious that Pepper wasn't going to let me ride him, and coupled with him being cramped here, Dad found someone who had a proper spread and other horses to keep him company. To console me for not having my pony anymore, he got me a mini bike. Mom was not pleased. LOL Dad rode a Harley in WWII as a military policeman, and my brother had a motorcycle, and my best friend had a small motorcycle. I rode that mini bike a LOT.

My great uncle had a Shetland for his grandchildren while I was growing up. Her name was Lola and everyone was nuts about her. My uncle had to build a gate for her shed because she would run into her shed with a rider every time. After he put up the gate she started tossing her riders. A couple of training issues for sure. She was friendly and loved attention but she hated to be ridden.
Jan, I'm so happy for you and Izzy. If it's Dani's fault, I'm grateful to Dani.
Did you continue to ride motorcycles, Siobhan?

No. I did for a long time. I've ridden to the Black Hills Rally a couple of times and that's a 2500 mile round trip. But I've lost so many friends to bike crashes -- and though some were their own fault for being reckless or drunk, about half were because a car "didn't see them" -- that I lost my nerve.

Thanks Birdysue for the info. She is smart and I can see in her behaviour at times that she is trying to get the upper hand. I already have a quaker that is smarter than me - I am trying not to let any of the other animals do the same thing. Izzy had her feet done yesterday - she kicked the farrier once and tried to bite the handler twice - so we need to get to work on those little legs of hers.
Siobhan, interesting about the bike riding. We all come together on this forum to discuss our quakers but eventually we learn more and more about each other and we then become friends.

Izzy has been put up for adoption. It has given me a shock as she still had a long way to go but they have heaps of horses and need to rehome some so they can take others that are in need. I will be approaching them tomorrow about adopting her. I currently sponsor her and bought her heaps of stuff last weekend - a coat, her own grooming kit, halter, lead rope, lunge rope, etc. I would appreciate it if everyone could send special thoughts Izzy's way - I want only the best for her and if that is to be with a family (and not me), then so be it.

Spent a bit of time with Izzy yesterday - plus I cleaned her paddock. She isn't afraid of me anymore and I can walk up to her slowly and she will sniff my hand and then walk away. This is a big step for her. She actually recognises me now which is exciting for me. Of course, if I have a carrot in my hand I actually get to give her a scratch while she is eating it. I guess the most important thing is that she is not running away from me anymore. We plan to take her and Richie for a walk to the lake (which is at the end of the 80 acre property). My horse mentor is going to spend a little bit of time with her today. My mind is made up to adopt her but the person I need to speak to about agistment wont be available until tomorrow however she knows of my interest because my mentor contacted her on Friday to say I had had a melt down about Izzy appearing on the adoption Facebook page. So, my fingers and toes are crossed that by Wednesday of this coming week, Izzy will have a new person to care for her for the rest of her life.
