Peppy is doing great, social-wise. After being cage bound when I first got him, he will now usually want to step up to my hand. I leave his cage door open and have a platform perch just below, and he can usually be found in the doorway or on the platform. The last couple days, he has also decided to take himself for walks/flights (mostly walks) around the living room. So far, so good.
My dog Wanda is very sweet natured, but she has an irresistible urge to chase and to pounce, and has many times chased birds outdoors. I have not been able to break that habit. I am very careful to not leave her unsupervised when the birds are out. Almost without exception.
Yesterday, I popped into the kitchen for something, almost literally turning my back for a second. In that time, I heard a noise, and walked back to the living room. I could see that Peppy was not in his cage. My heart leapt up to my throat. I rushed in and saw Wanda lying near his cage. Fearing the absolute worst, I looked around for Peppy, and finally found him, calmly perched on Wanda's outstretched foreleg. Wanda just looked from him to me and back. It was really cute, and I could have enjoyed it if I hadn't been so busy cursing my negligence. So I hugged them both, and vowed it would not happen again.

My dog Emma knows she is not allowed to chase Shah if he flies anywhere - but I dont trust her for a second simply because she chases the birds outside. When Shah takes off and flies to the room Emma is in, she looks very confused like she doesnt know quite what to do. That gives me time to retrieve Shah and praise Emma for being a good girl. Time to get his wings clipped I suppose - not that he flies very much but if he gets a shock, he takes off and sometimes it is difficult to locate him if I havent seen which room he has flown into (I live in a 5 bedroom house). Plus he refuses to answer me when I call his name

Hahaha oh man... I wish I could see a picture of that... but that would have been so scary. Good grief. Glad it turned out well! Jan, Cupcake refuses to answer to her name too. She always turns and looks but she feels no need to respond typically.

Yeah, I wish I'd been able to take a picture, but I didn't dare leave the room again.

We're having similar issues with Rocky 'Too and Jack. Rocky thinks it's amusing to stalk and try to bite Jack, who does not find being bitten amusing.

Bilbo has almost no prey drive (our main reason for choosing his breed), and when the birds are flying around he completely ignores them. Once, when he was a puppy Taz flew off of his cage and was walking around on the floor. Bilbo started barking, telling me that something was wrong! LOL It was like "Hey! Mom, come look! Something weird happened, and this thing isn't supposed to be there!!!!"
We always watch them, and put Bilbo to bed at night when we have all three birds out together, and the cat is always locked in the bedroom when any of the birds are out.

We had a Tibetan mastiff that I would have trusted with my birds. He would just lie there while a tufted titmouse would land on him and harvest nesting material right out of his hide. Didn't seem to mind it a bit.

I just wish some of Gigi's nature would rub off on Jack. Maggie used to land on Gigi and use her for a perch or even ride her through the house, and Gigi would just look at me helplessly, like "Mom, PLEASE!" but never, ever made any attempt to make her move or hurt her in any way. I think Jack knows he's not supposed to hurt Rocky or even get very close, but he's a boundary-pusher and so is Rocky.
