For the last few days, my little guy has seemed to strain a bit when he poops. He kind of backs around his weaning cage, tries to go, and repeats this until he finally gets the job done, and when he does it makes an audible noise (the poop, not him). Is this cause to be worried? There doesn't seem to be a smell associated, and he seems just fine otherwise - alert, bright eyed, playful, and seems to be eating and sleeping well. I just want to take the best care of this little guy as possible, and it has me worried.

I would call my vet and explain what's happening. They may or may not want you to bring your baby in for a visit. Good luck!!

I just got him and don't have a vet as of yet, or he'd already be there. And it's a holiday weekend, so all the avian vets in my area are closed. That's the reason I asked here. The animal emergency hospital is so expensive, and they don't have an avian vet on staff, so they have to call one in from somewhere else, and I dont even have enough to cover the exam.

One thing healthy birds do easily and, to varying degrees, often, is poop. Any change in habits is cause for some concern. Birds that are being hand fed can easily get bacterial infections, and that could be what you're seeing, but no one but a vet is going to be able to tell you for sure what is going on. Birds can be ill even though their appearance and behavior seems quite normal
You might ask the emergency hospital if they have the ability to test bird poop for excess yeast or bacteria. This doesn't necessarily take an avian vet, if they are willing to do a little research. This may not get you very far, even if they will do it, but it's all I can think of.

Shoot, I'm sorry.... Here is a little tidbit of information from www.birdchannel.com/bird-diet-and-health/bird-care/bird-poop.aspxWhat If Your Bird Can’t Poop? "Constipation is not a common problem in birds,” Burkett said. "However, if a bird is straining to poop and nothing is coming out, it could mean there is a blockage, such as an egg stuck inside a female or a foreign body in the GI tract.”

Cupcake has always had a bit of this behavior. There is often a little squeaky noise when she poops, and she does seem to hunker down quite a bit when she does... but it's always been this way. I don't observe any change over time, and the vet has watched her poop and not found it to be a problem, so apparently this can be okay. But if there is a relatively sudden change in behavior I would definitely get your little buddy to the vet as soon as possible.

Got to the vet today, finally! Little guy is 6 weeks old, 118 grams, and perfectly healthy and on track! He was so well behaved for the doc. Sat on my lap unrestrained for the car ride there and back, looking out the window, and didn't give the slightest argument when he had to go into the vet's office in the pet carrier. He just played with his stuffed bear and took a little nap while we waited. Now I can rest easier because my little dude has a clean bill of health!
