I was reading the other day and it mentioned about parrots that get petted and that the oil from our hands will get on their feathers. Has anyone here ever used any soap when their birds are bathing? I know there are many safe ones out there.... but I have never used any. Should I? He doesn't seem to need it but I was just wondering.

I wouldn't, unless there was a serious problem. Almost all birds have a gland at the base of their tail that secretes an oil they preen their feathers with. It helps the insulation and waterproofing qualities of the feathers. Any soap you might use would probably strip that away. Probably not catastrophic in our protected environments, but it might not feel good to our birds to be so squeaky clean. Under normal conditions I think they manage fine with plain water. Washing your hands before handling them is a fine idea, though.

I use a bit of aloe vera liquid in Shah's bath but only when he is moulting or mutilating. It helps soothe the skin. For the rest of the time I just use plain water. Soaps strip away oils in human skin (no matter what they claim) so I would give it a miss.
