We used to use popsicle sticks/lollipop sticks and clothespins... eventually we had to stop allowing Cupcake to build nests, though, as it leads to hormonal behavior for her. Not all birds are this way, however.

I give Oscar plastic tie-wraps. The kind many tradespeople will use. They are usually 12-14 inches in length and he loves them. Others have given them plastic drinking straws as well as they are flexible. My bird does not like to build on the bottom of the cage but closer to the top so I build a little wooden platform for him first and made sure that there were many perches around to connect to.
I don't find my quaker to be extremely hormonal but he is at certain times of the year... such as now... spring time here. He builds his nest constantly and I find it good to keep him interested in something other than me... lol

Sanbimom, if you want to see an example of Oscar's tie wrap nest, look in the Photo Gallery, under How Many Houses Does a Bird Need, posted by Julianna. They are amazing little structures!

Ralph likes to build with wooden dowels that are thicker and longer than chopsticks-- about one-eighth inch thick, and cut to 6 inch to 9 inch lengths.
