I have a Quaker parrot called Peanut (who is 3 years old today!) who is a really good communicator.
He says 'morning' when I uncover him and 'hello' to me and my family when they visit. The first thing he learned to say when he was small was 'it's ok'. He is very sensitive and if he believes I'm upset, he seems to get quite distressed and repeats 'it's ok' to me until I reassure him I'm actually fine. If he is nervous or scared, I tell him 'it's ok' until he calms down. If he does something he knows to be good, he will say 'good boy' to himself and asks for apple, water, cashew (although he says 'cash') and will ask for a shower when he wants one. He is able to associate words and one day he flew to the window to watch the neighbours. It was pouring with rain to which he announced 'shower'. He has quite a vocabulary, too much to list here.
He spends quite a bit of time out of his cage and if I am on the phone, he does his best to get in on the action and starts trying to talk to the person on the other end. When he sits on my arm and I say 'good boy' and 'I love you' he gets very fluffed up and acts really bashful and coy. He does a really good impression of trickling water, my laugh and the sound of me filing my nails.
It is great that he can communicate and he is great company. He's managed to charm my family so they all love him!
Peanut often makes a clicking noise (like a human tutting) when he's cuddly and also when he's being put to bed but I'm unsure what this means although he seems happy and comfortable when he is doing it. I've looked on-line but can't find the meaning of it. Does anyone know? Can anyone suggest somewhere that gives guidance on the meaning of the various QP noises?
I would love to hear about other talking QPs and if there is anything else exceptional or funny other QPs do.
Thanks
Teresa (and Peanut)
