I have pneumonia and the dr. prescribed a nebulizer. I carry it in the house and Sugar starts freaking out. Is she scared of the nebulizer? No, she is scared of the plain brown box it came in.

It's just about impossible to predict which items they will take great exception to. I haven't found anything specific that Peppy hates, but my grey cannot abide retractable metal measuring tapes.

It is weird cause when I visit my Mom who is in an assisted living situation, most people there have walkers, including my mom.... and Oscar is terrified of walkers. I do not really know if it is the metal, the wheels, or just the caring basket... but he runs and hides as much as he can when I go visit. It is sad in a way cause all the people want to see him... and love having a bird around... but Oscar cannot stand the walkers... or canes for that matter.
It seems that anything unusual from their normal home.... is always scary for them. Be patient and Sugar will eventually adjust.

I had an african grey (timneh) a long time ago. She was afraid of the broom I used to sweep the kitchen floor. She would GROWL at the broom, every nite when I got it out of the closet, for TWENTY YEARS.

Ralph doesn't like cardboard boxes either. I think he remembers the one he was in when he came home from the pet store. Even though it was a short trip, he hated being in that little box-- and who could blame him?

Ralph-in-a-box? Tsk, tsk.... a bird of his caliber.

Brooms...boxes.... yes yes yes... Oscar is scared of all of those as well. And like Sharyn stated... for years and years. Seems when they get a fear of something... it takes forever to get over it... if ever.

I carry in a lot of boxes and it never bothers her. I think it was the size of the box.

Ralph-in-a-box? Tsk, tsk.... a bird of his caliber. I know-- and I regret it. Thankfully, Ralph forgave me, but not the cardboard box.

Ralph-in-a-box I had Shah in-a-box as I wasnt expecting to get a bird when he chose me. Not only did we have to go by bus, but we had to catch a train and then a long, undignified walk home. I havent noticed if he has an aversion to boxes as he absolutely hates everything I touch and either attacks me or screams abuse at me.

Bonnie quite likes cardboard boxes and small dark places - she screeches in sheer delight every time. I will put a couple of photos under the Photos section (when I work out how to do it...). Jan, I think Shah is jealous of anything you are in contact with, if it's not him. I hope Bonnie doesn't learn the screaming abuse thing from Shah through mental telepathy. But the 'Monkey Breath' insult is unique.

Even though it was a short trip, he hated being in that little box-- and who could blame him? Cupcake came home in a box too. I think she hated it as well... but she doesn't appear to be afraid of boxes as a result. She will never be okay with the vacuum cleaner, however. Nor my toothbrush or, particularly, my beard trimmer. But she isn't scared of them as much as she immediately wants to attack them with multiple beak bonks and bites when I try to use them.

Amazing how so many things are similar. It must be the breeding from long ago.

Jade is terrified of scissors, even if they're across the room, and her sharp little eyes can spot them even if I try to block her line of vision. I have to use them to open food bags and things. She and Clyde are both afraid of the siphon I use to clean fish tanks. Rocky is terrified of a wooden stool we have. He's okay when it's sitting still, but if you pick it up he goes berserk. It's very handy for sitting down when we're having snuggle time because I can rest my arm on my knees, but I hate to scare him by moving it so I can sit on it. Ringo yells "IKE!" and flies away at any sudden movement, but I've had her since she was 3 weeks old so it must be a wild bird instinct. I've certainly never done anything to give her a complex, I don't think.

I keep a pair of scissors handy for opening bags of pellets and other little parrot-related tasks. Ralph finds them highly interesting and thinks they might be fun to play with, which obviously isn't a good idea. He likes the vacuum cleaner too and will chatter away while it's in use (George the YCA used to take a bath when I vacuumed, pretty common for Amazons). He especially likes the retractable power cord. When I'm finished vacuuming, I have to pull the cord out and push the button for it to snap back inside-- over and over-- while somebirdie bobs his head in approval.
