I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out why Peppy got a bacterial infection. He gets the same food and water as Allie, and they have the same exposures. The only thing that comes to mind is that in Peppy's night cage, there are plastic food and water dishes. I had him in that cage full time for quite a while, and I still put food and water in it for him. Has anyone had any problems with plastic bowls, or know of any?

Plastic bowls don't have the best reputation-- if they get scratched up, they can harbor bacteria, so they typically have to be replaced fairly often, and must be kept scrupulously clean. I use a plastic food dish for Ralph-- the Quick-lok type that's harder for him to spill. I wash it several times a day, every time I change his food. I replaced the first one after Ralph had chewed up the rim. We haven't had any problems related to the plastic dish.

Everybody has plastic dishes except Rocky Too around here. The Quakers won't use metal dishes. Or ceramic. Or anything but plastic. The tiels aren't as picky, especially Freddie, who will eat anything out of anything.

Ewwww. Now I have to go buy new dishes for Trixie and Ringo. The others' dishes are round so even though they're plastic I can get them clean. Ringo and Trixie have square ones just like the ones in that article.

Mine not only have two corners each, but also an imprint at the bottom that creates additional tiny crevices. What boneheaded design. They are outta here.

I scrubbed Ringo's and Trixie's with a toothbrush in hot water and got them spanking clean. I also got Trixie a new food dish but she won't use it. I left the old one, too, until she gets used to the new one, but she won't go near it.

What would be a good alternative to replace these stereotypical plastic dishes? Cupcake has them too... I have two sets that I alternate each day but I fear they are not adequate.

I like stainless steel. I replaced the plastic with these: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00303H570/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
One of them in particular is the flimsiest stainless steel bowl I've ever seen, but it should do the job.
I just got off the phone with Peppy's vet and she agreed this could have been the source of his infection. He's on a different antibiotic now but doesn't seem to be bouncing back quite as well as he did with the Baytril. She wants to me take him off the medicine, give him the probiotics, and see if he rebounds over the weekend. If not, he'll go back on Baytril next week. All probably quite avoidable.

Thanks! I wish they made metal dishes that were shaped like the plastic ones. I feel like these little circular ones will be awkward for Cupcake at least initially. I will give it a shot though.

Oscar's dishes have always been the metal ones. They clean up very well... only problem is that you cannot stand them on a counter or table and keep their balance.
