My 4 year old female, Muzzy, was mauled by my daughter's 8 week old Husky pup on Mon. July 14th approximately 1:45 pm... My youngest daughter had left her cage open to play with her, went to gather her clothes, and left to go home to her Dad's, totally forgetting the cage! I was napping with my 5 year old granddaughter at the time, I heard her leave! I got up for some reason around 2:10, Came out of the bedroom and went into shock, I believe because there were feathers EVERY where! I started calling out for Sadie, (my 18 month old boxer) because I couldn't even remember my Muzzy's name! I saw the puppy over in the corner under the chair... and there she was! OMGOSH I was devastated! Called my daughter, and told her "Thanks to her MY bird was DEAD!" She is 17, mind you, Muzz was always calling her by name when she wasn't here or when she would come over! I tossed the puppy in her kennel, chained my Sadie up and finally called my fiance and told him the news. My Son showed up and I handed the phone to him and Bruce asked him to pick her up and wrap her to bury her. I just couldn't do it!!! Well, I was still on the phone with him and my Son went over to pick her up, jumped back, and shouted a "not-so-nice" word and said; I'm not picking her up, she's purring and moving!!! I grabbed a cloth diaper, put it over her, (not to look at the damage) and comforted her as much as I could while we called 5 different vets in town. Finally the last one we called, referred us to Milwood Animal Clinic, approx 20 miles away! We drove her there, got her in and examined. That's the first time I really looked at the damage! Doc said there was no way to tell if there was internal damage, would have to wait a couple days. They gave me 2 oral meds and a cream to put on her damage! Monday night I slept on the couch with her cuddled on my chest! A big NO-NO!!! I read yesterday, not to sleep with your birds! I also said I prayer for her! She has extensive feather damage, a broken left toe! She finally "pooped" yesterday! She's been drinking LOTS of water and eating boiled eggs. Today, she has ate seed, pooped normal and Brooke came over and she's Talking up a storm!!! I went to work last night and the fiance sent a text of her, perched on her wooden dowel, her right leg is broken too! ;( I would like to also say, the clinic called yesterday to check on her and her appointment recheck is tomorrow!
I'm sorry for taking up so much space but I had to get this off my chest and I'm super happy I found this forum to share my story and perhaps find someone who has had a similar accident! Or, prevent this from happening to any other birdie!!!

This was painful to read. I can't imagine what you went through. A good reminder that you can't ever, ever turn your back when dogs and birds are together.

Just got back from the vet! She's doing great and now it's a waiting period. X ray shows no break and may be ligament injury, but it's not visible on X ray. I asked the Doc if she thought she would survive when we brought her in Monday... She said, As feisty as she was, she was feeling very optimistic of her healing, upon examination, but the phone call before arrival, not so optimistic! That's my Muzzy!!! She's mean spirited (lol) and a fighter! I feel she's going to get that ankle healed! I told her on the way home, "If you peck at that leg, you'll be a peg leg and I'll have to sell you to the pirates!" I would never!!! Thank you all for your comments, thoughts and prayers!

Poor Muzzy, hope she keeps on improving and getting better. When we rescued Casey she had a broken leg, in a little cast, we had to hold food for her since she couldn't pick anything big up. But it didn't take long after the wrap was off for her to get back to normal. Best wishes for continued improvement!

She's getting better! She's really spiteful and "mean" but, honestly, I have to say through this mishap... I truly love her cuddling! Doc said to "let her be" and follow her, watch what she does" She is afraid to splint (ankle is NOT broken) or e collar her, for fear it might set her back should her 'good' leg get stuck! She is too much of a "b"ird... if you know what I mean!!! My daughter, Brooke (her favorite, the one who left cage open) and I, seem to think that Muzz is gonna play this out for the extra attention she's been receiving! We're okay with that! She's being a brat about taking her medicine earlier! Ugh, I hate having to basically pry her beak open, but we got it done and I praise her! I really don't know how to do this forum thing yet... I would like to introduce myself formally, since the "shock" has worn off! Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated! Again, thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers!!!

Sounds like Muzzy is one tough little bird. Hope she recovers soon.
Our two dogs are mostly outsiders, but when I do bring them in, the FIRST thing I do is make sure the cages are locked up. That means an actual lock on Lovey's because her big flight cage is easy to knock open. Toby, the collie mix, has never bothered a prey animal, but I've lost a few hens to Gabby when they've flown over the fence into the back yard. Not fun.

I cannot believe she's still alive. That is so amazing, and absolutely wonderful!!! As for the whole "forum thing", what we know about you is that you love Muzzy and your other FIDS (feathered/furred/finned kids) and are willing to do whatever it takes to keep them happy and healthy, and you are a wonderful asset to the forum. Aside from that, you can tell us anything you want about your family, what you do, life experiences....what I love so much about this forum in particular is that it's not like any other forum I've ever been a part of. We're all friends here. So much so, that I feel like some of our members are members of my extended family. We all support each other here. There hasn't been a "flame war" or any negativity for a very long time, and for that I am grateful. So really, share whatever you want.
