So hopefully in 6 months or so I will be in my own place again. I was thinking about getting a sun conure then. As I understand it, QPs tend to be pretty dominant. Should I even consider this? What are the chances they would bond to each other and not be as friendly to me? What other things should i be thinking about in the meantime? Thanks!

It's impossible to predict how any two parrots of any type will react to each other. They may decide to become best buddies, they may hate each other passionately, or anything in between. Quakers and Conures can get along well, but it depends mostly on the individual parrots. Separate cages are a must, and separate out-of-cage time is a good idea, at least until it's known how well the parrots will get along together. It may never be possible to have them out together without close supervision. "First bird" protocol would have to be followed too-- your QP would be first to be greeted in the morning, first to be fed, first to get one-on-one time with you, first in everything, but last to go to bed at night.

Jan, is your story about how Sha picked you on here somewhere? I would like to hear it. All my birds have had no choice i have picked them. Im assuming he came from a breeder? Sun conures are the prettiest parrot around, imho. I was going to get one but the place I went to had them priced outrageously, all in all I'm glad. Sonic has been such a learning experience for me. I still would like to have a sunny though. I just don't want to cause Sonic any grief.

I went to the pet shop on the other side of the city - they only specialise in birds. All I wanted to do was have a look at the sun conures and to see how loud they were. I was not going to buy one at that time. On the way over (by bus and train) I had thought of a name and I would know it was the right bird because it would nibble me on the lips and snuggled into my neck. Who knew that quakers had ESP. There had been 4 quakers that had come in the day before and only 2 were left. So I go into the birdshop, go to where all the babies are hanging out and they all run away from me - except for one. He waddled over to me, climbed up my clothes, nibbled me on the lips and snuggled into my neck. When the owner was showing me the conures, this little green and grey creature would run across me and lunge at the conures. I wasnt allowed to interact with them. So, he unceremoniously travelled home in a box by public transport. And that is the story of how Shah and I met

Well, he was a delight for the first 3 weeks and I thought I had the most wonderful bird in the world. But he couldnt keep it that way. And now he is a demanding bully Dont worry, Izzie didnt pick me. If she had a choice she would have picked no-one.

I love the story of meeting Shah, Jan. I'm like Ricky. Neither of my birds were able to choose me. When I got Allie CAG, I had to drive five hours to get her. She was already in her carrier when I arrived so we didn't interact at all. Most of the drive back she stayed as far from me as she could get in her carrier. Only towards the end did she venture over to start checking me out. Poor thing must have felt kidnapped. It was a similar situation with Peppy, but he was braver about the whole deal.

It's funny how we end up with our 'owners'. I went into a pet shop to buy bird toys and saw this cute blue bird with a sign on the cage that said 'Blue Quaker parrot, $800'. After getting home I looked up some info, then located a breeder about an hour's drive away. And the rest is history. I often wonder if that Blue Quaker is still in the pet shop...
I saw a sun conure for the first time in February. I'd always imagined them as bigger parrots, but the one I saw was about the same size as a quaker. As to whether a sun conure and quaker would get along, who knows? But, if you're willing to put in the time and effort, all things are possible.

I know that Oscar does not like the conures. My bird sitter has two of them and Oscar removed one of their toes. Yikes. But she does have a quaker as well and they do not like each other very much but they do squawk to one another however, she tells me they need to be in separate cages and the quaker will pick on the conures. Your choice.

Before we got Cupcake I had always wanted a Sun Conure. They are beautiful birds. Sure can be noisy though. I went to Sylvan Heights Bird Park in North Carolina on my way back from Disney this past weekend, and from halfway across the park, amongst the noise of hundreds of other birds, I immediately knew they had Sun Conures somewhere. By the way, this park is quite cool if you ever are in the area of Scotland Neck, NC. As you guys know, there were roughly 200 mantids involved in how I found Cupcake. Ricky, if you haven't read that story, I posted it a while back in this thread here: www.quakerparrotforum.com/thread/443/mantid-saga-met-cupcakeIt's quite a story

It was quite the story...... I will be in north Georgia in may. I will see if my friends will go there. Idk if the sun conures are much louder than quakers though. Sonic is the loudest little bugger when he wants to be.

Nice! It is a cool place. Yeah I don't know if they are louder, but I am used to Quakers so the Sun Conure noises are a bit more jarring to me.

Haha yes, the noise of one Quaker is enough for me too... Although Cupcake really takes it easy on us. She is very quiet. She wasn't at first, but as she has gotten older she has gotten much quieter. She seems to know we would prefer she not yell unless there is a reason.
