Ralph isn't his usual self today. He's been unusually quiet and sleepy. Shortly after I uncovered him this morning he went back to sleep but he woke up so I could let him out while I fixed his breakfast. He didn't eat much of that, just his fresh peas, and he slept again after that. Through the morning and afternoon, he would sleep for a few minutes, wake up and play for a while or visit with me and get head scratches, then go back to sleep again. I spent a lot of time trying to get a veterinarian to see him but wasn't able to get in anywhere before next month. One office didn't call back for two hours after I left a voicemail message and the receptionist asked a lot of questions then told me they wouldn't see Ralph and I need to call Cornell. The one that offered the September appointment said if I need help sooner to call Cornell. Another office I've used before said that their only vet who sees birds is on vacation until next week. Their receptionist told me to call back next Thursday "if you still have your parrot and still want an appointment." Nice. Some offices I called only see dogs and cats and one of those told me to call Cornell. None of that was helpful. Cornell is a long drive from here and their consultation fees are more than I can afford. Ralph has seemed better since dinnertime when he came out to play. He ate well and had a good time playing in the cupboard. I tried to keep him up a little longer than usual but he was ready for bed at his usual time. He doesn't like it if I turn on the light to check on him at night but I will do that later and let him grumble about it. I hope he'll feel better in the morning but if he still seems off, I'll try to find some other veterinarians that aren't too far away.

Oh dear! Do you want to talk about what’s going on with Ralph? I have helped sick Quakers do better by hand feeding baby bird food, sometimes mixing it with a baby food like squash.
I hope Ralph is feeling better tomorrow. Willow sends him a smooch if he’s taking smooches.

Ralph is much better today. He was a busy little Quaker most of the day, but he did take a couple short naps. That's become part of his everyday routine for a while now. Nap for 10 minutes then wake up full of energy and ready to go. He ate well, both his breakfast and dinner and his popcorn treat. Even when he was "off" yesterday, he ate all his dinner and his poops were normal. I'm not sure what was wrong. If there were a 24 hour bug that affected parrots, that would describe what it was like.
From my earlier post it's obvious how frustrated I was over trying to find a nearby veterinarian who would see Ralph. There was a recent report on the local news about how pet owners are having a difficult time getting vet appointments. It seems to be true. I discovered that the avian certified vet who used to take care of George the YCA is in practice in a different location. Unfortunately, her office is a long way from here and the route goes through some of the worst parts of the city. Since Ralph hates riding in the car even for short distances, it could be rough on him to go to that vet, especially when he's not feeling well. It could really make matters worse. There are some veterinary practices closer that I didn't try yesterday that I would if Ralph needed to be examined. If he continues to be as normal as he was today, I'll hold off on taking him anywhere.

I am sorry Ralph wasn’t feeling his best, but glad he seems better today Casey will be 18 this fall and he does take naps now too. Hopefully you can find a close vet for a check up for reassurance

Ralph was his usual self again today. I think I'll E-mail some of the veterinary practices and ask some questions before I attempt to book an appointment and to be better prepared if I need an appointment quickly again. I really wish that George's former vet was in a better location. In the past week, there were two shootings and a stabbing within a few blocks of her office. It's obviously not in a nice neighborhood.
