Hello all! Long time no post!
Looking for some possible advice, or if anyone has any experience with this situation. Apologies in advance for the long post!
I've had Yoshi the Quaker for about 7 1/2 years now. I've had Melly the Sun Conure for I think close to 6 years. For much of this time Melly would like to spend time on Yoshi's cage, and on the "neutral" play area, but Melly also spent a lot of time with me, without Yoshi. My (now) wife moved in with me in 2020 and Melly seemed to bond with her over time more than me. Melly would spend hours with my wife while she was working from home at her computer. She would go through phases where she would want to spend some time with me too, but ultimately would go back to spending the bulk of her time with my wife.
Fast forward to last year, we let Melly's flight feathers get a bit too long. One day we left the front door open because we were trying to carry in a large box from the SUV. Melly flew out the door to try to get to my wife, but she saw us carrying the big scary package and turned the other direction and flew off. We quickly lost sight of her. We were eventually able to locate her in a tree a block away, and after some time able to retrieve her.
This seemed to be some kind of turning point for her. From this point on she no longer wanted to spend time with me or my wife. She started spending more time with Yoshi, and soon she became obsessed with him. She tries to protect him from myself and my wife, and gets completely ticked off if we should handle Yoshi. She attacks our fingers if we get near the two of them. She panics if Yoshi is out of her sight and will scream and fly around the house to find him, even tho she is clipped (this often results in her on the floor). Yoshi does not feel the same way to her at all. He doesn't mind her being right next to him (and definitely enjoys her preening him), but he doesn't display bonded behaviors towards her.
Everything I've read, and my gut instinct tells me to seperate them. However, we live in a studio at the moment so this is simply not possible. We will be building a house late this year or early next year, so at that point we can seperate them. But for the time being I'm really not sure what can be done. I imagine it's not healthy for her to have such feelings for him and they aren't reciprocated, and i know it's definitely not healthy for her the amount of stress and anxiety she displays when Yoshi comes to spend time on my shoulder.
